DayStar of the Month ~ January 2012

What a great way to start the year, with Mr. Rudy Pallante as our January DayStar of the Month! Rudy has been coming to Dog Star Ranch since 2007 as a park member and daycare participant. Over the last couple years he and his sister, Mia, are biweekly regulars on the Dog-Gone-Waggin’ and they love their bus ride! No leash required! Open their back door to the house and they run right up into the van ready to hit the road! When out on the Star Buddy walks, when Rudy realizes it’s time to head in, he makes sure to get two extra laps in before heading in! Rudy is never seen without a smile and a waggin’ tail! He is a favorite among all the Star Buddies and the Grooming Buddies! Congrats to Rudy Pallante for being the DayStar of the Month for January 2012!

A Dog's Purpose? (from a 6 year old)...

This originally came to me as an email and I had to share it with you. There is a lot that we can learn from our dogs...

"Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live. He said,''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The Six-year-old continued, ''Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.''

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. Take naps. Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body. Delight in the simple joy of a long walk. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently."

I know it's not spring, but this weather sure feels spring-like!

A new found friendship.... Benny the beagle has been coming to DSR doggie daycare and parks for years, but never have I seen a relationship like this. Demon is a young pup that has been coming for the past couple weeks and when Demon is put in his crate for a little nap, Benny naps right along with him... Today he went so far as to sleep on the crate that Demon was sleeping in... Here's to many years of fun and friendship with you two boys!!

What a day! Started with rain, changed to a combo of rain/sleet, thinking it's going to finish out as snow... but you never know in Michigan! Dog Star Ranch 2011 DOG of the YEAR!!!

This dog graced us with her unique personality in 2006. She was a work of art in progress from start to finish; sculpting the Dog Star Ranch rules and policies, painting her impression on our training idea protocols. Drawing lines on our daycare routines. She gave us a dog’s view of working outside the box. And leaving an ever lasting imprint on all of our hearts through her teachings, friendships, pistol Annie personality, determined to be the first in every DSR category. She was DSR’s first Shar Pei, the first Shar Pei that grouped, the first to make a mess in the front lobby at the water fountain, She invented “couch time”, she inspired our report cards and journaling details, the first to go to the vet, the first ER call to the DSR owner, the reason for a dog park socials with owner and trainer, the educator of “every dog can be a park member” even if its in special use or on leash on nature trails. The editor of DSR policies and procedures- and called it ”Phoebe tested and approved”.

Phoebe’s humans were gracious with Dog Star Ranch’s trial and tribulations as we worked through the learning curve that not every dog can go right or left sometimes they have to do both at different occasions.

Wow, it sure is hard to believe that 2011 is on its way out. What a great way to end to end the year by “crowning” Boo Parman as the DayStar of the Month for Decemeber! Boo has been coming to DSR as a park member, daycare regular, and boarding guest since 2006. His smiling face is always a wonderful thing to see on the Dog-Gone-Waggin’! He is a happy boy who loves to play with just about anyone, but who also enjoys his lounging around time. Boo will never turn down a back scratch or belly rub! He always seems to try those sad puppy dog eyes in the bath tub and grooming salon, but the girls know that it doesn’t work. Thank you to Boo (and his brother, Barkley) for being such a wonderful part of Dog Star Ranch over the years. Congrats to Boo for being the Dog Star Ranch DayStar of the Month for December 2011!

So what really does happen in DSR Doggie Daycare??

Well, Jen came back to let me know that my very best pal called today to check on me and see what I really do in Doggie Daycare. Who better to share that with her than me, Buddy Franks! So this is special just for you :) This morning I was met by my Star Buddy James who greeted me (and all the other DogStars) with a smile! Can you believe that there are 29 of us here today?! That's wonderful! Once we are all checked in for the day, out the parks we go! In the summer, a lot of times we'll visit Cody's Cove for a swim, but it was just a little too chilly for that today (even though it was a beautiful sunny day for the start of December!) so off we go to the Star Buddy Park. That park is huge and has a jungle gym for us to play on and around! Today on my run I was joined by Finnegan, Copper, Buddy E, Bode, Ligety, Kacy, Rosie, Pookie, Bandit and some boarding dogs too! We had so much fun! James kept a close eye on us while we played for that hour, but we always mind our manners. The play time doesn't stop there, even after our run, we are able to spend time with our buds, just in smaller groups. Today, Star Buddy Nick and Patt were working on re-painting some of the rooms so most of our playtime was outside today which was perfect! Towards the end of the day, some dogs will head over to the Grooming Salon to "freshen up" before their parents come to pick them up. Star Buddy Hunter was with us for the afternoon and he made sure that we were all ready to head home when our parents come to collect us.

I had a great day! Thank you for checking up on me and I can't wait to tell you all about it when I get home! Dog Star definitely gave me somethin' to bark about today!

The DayStar for the Month of November is the inseparable Golden pair of Ginger and Sasha Emery! These lovely ladies have been using the parks and daycare since 2009. We are also very proud to say that they have also both passed the DSR Advanced Training class and are now certified Therapy Dogs! Way to go girls (and Vicki and Debbie)! Both girls love to enjoy the parks together with all their friends, canine and human, and use their puppy dog eyes to try to gain a few extra treats at the end of the day. We always enjoy seeing your smiling faces and waggin’ tails! Thank you for being a part of Dog Star Ranch and Congrats on being our DayStars of the Month for November 2011!

Hunter and James are two new faces that you'll be seeing around Dog Star Ranch. Both are training to be Star Buddies and they are doing a great job getting to know the routine of the Ranch and having a great time learning about all the dogs! You'll more than likely see James during the morning shifts while Hunter will be the night shifts. Welcome to the team boys!

DayStar of the Month for October 2011 ~ Copper Szymanski

The DayStar of the Month for October goes to Copper Szymanski. Copper has been a regular Monday and Thursday DayStar and park member for several years. Copper is a lab to the fullest! If there is a place that has water, he’s there!! It may be the pond or just a large water trough in the yards, it doesn’t matter to him. He also never lets a little rain or mud slow him down, in fact, he loves it. The muddier the better in his eyes!! Copper loves to play with all dogs, big or small, and he is an excellent member of Dog Star Ranch. Congrats Copper on being our DayStar of the Month for October 2011!

Finally!! The sun has came out today and everyone is all smiles!!! But, dont forget MONDAY is HALLOWEEN!!! So, if you plan on bringing your pup in, bring them dressed in their Halloween costumes or we can dress them up in one of ours so we can take pictures of everyone in their Halloween decor!!

Yesterday was a little bit busy but we were finally able to get the pictures up today from Daycare! Soon we will have the pictures up from today!

What a gloomy day outside but that still does not stop us from having a great time in Daycare!
