Kiefer: Hit it!

Kiefer cues DJ Love at the Pond to play "I'm A Believer" by Smash Mouth:
I thought love was
Only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else
But not for me
Love was out to get to me
That's the way it seems
Disappointment haunted
All my dreams

And then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her
If I tried

Maizie joins in:
I thought love was
More or less a given thing
But the more I gave the less
I got, oh yeah
What's the use in trying
All you get is pain
When I wanted sunshine
I got rain

And then I saw his face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave him
If I tried

Kiefer:
What's the use in trying
All you get is pain
When I wanted sunshine
I got rain

And then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her
If I tried

Maizie:
Then I saw his face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind

Maize and Kiefer together:
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm a believer
I'm a believer
I'm a believer

It's A Great Day To Be A Dog ("It's A Great Day To Be Alive" by Travis Tritt)

And it's a great day to be a dog
I know the sun's still shining
When I close my eyes
I left my fur-friends at Dog Star Ranch
But why can't every day be Daycare!

And it's a great day to be a dog
I can see Dog Star Ranch
When I close my eyes
I left my fur-friends at Dog Star Ranch
But why can't every day be Daycare!

Lily Bean ("Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson)

She told me her name was Lily Bean, as she crooned a howl
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will play at Dog Star in the park...

Lily Bean is a Beagle
She's just a girl who loves coming to Dog Star

Lily Bean is a Beagle
She's just a girl who loves her little fur-friends

Lily Bean is a Beagle
She's just a girl who loves treats

Someone broke the news to Sadie that Pluto was no longer a planet...apparently she didn't know!

"...because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff... Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can't-control-yourself love it...when people call people nerds, mostly what they're saying is 'you like stuff.' Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, 'you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness'." - John Green

Warning! You are about to experience a "nerd out." A jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can't-control-yourself moment.

Once upon a time there was an Astronomer named Clyde Tombaugh who noticed that the orbits of Neptune and Uranus were being affected by the gravity of an unknown object in the Solar System.

Exciting, right?!

So, Clyde Tombaugh studied the night sky and after a lot of hard work and patience, he discovered PLUTO!

Some fun facts about Pluto:

1. It was known as the smallest planet in the Solar System and the 9th planet from the Sun
2. Pluto is only half as wide as the United States
3. It is smaller than Earth's moon
4. It takes 248 Earth years to go around the Sun
5. If you lived on Pluto, you would have to wait 248 Earth years to celebrate your 1st birthday
6. One day on Pluto is about 6 1/2 days on Earth
7. Pluto is very, very cold! Much colder than Antarctica!

However, as you all might know, Pluto is no longer considered a planet. Today, Pluto is considered a "dwarf planet." A dwarf planet orbits the Sun just like other planets, but smaller, so small that it cannot clear objects out of its path.

Today, August 24, marks the 10th anniversary of Pluto's demotion. It was on this day in 2006 that a group of astronomers - members of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) - met up in Prague to discuss Pluto.

In their voting of the new rules for defining planets, it was concluded that Pluto, after 76 years of being considered a planet, didn't make the cut.

So what is the actual definition (according to the IAU) of a 'planet' then?

Here are the three things that qualify a planet:
- is in orbit around the sun,
- has sufficient mass that its gravity pulls it into an almost round shape, and
- has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit

So where does Pluto fall short?
The last point. Pluto's orbit overlaps with Neptune's, which means no clear neighborhood for Pluto...

So today we remember the little guy!

Pluto! Never forget!

We hope everyone enjoys these fun facts! They were found on:

Take Me out to Dog Star (Take Me Out to the Ball Game)

Take me out to Dog Star
Take me out to the park
Bring the Chuck-it and a ball,
I don't care if we ever quit.
Let me fetch, fetch, fetch for the Star Buddy,
If they get tired, that's too bad.
For it's fetch, fetch, fetch fetch, all day,
At Dog Star Ranch!!

I swear that Minnie and Belle sing this song! And I'm sure that playing fetch is on their mind 90% of the time! These sweet girls LIVE for fetch! They LOVE fetch! As soon as they get to Dog Star, they know what they want to do, what they are going to do! Watching them play fetch is so fascinating and fantastic! They sure do entertain! And they don't get tired! If anything, the Star Buddy's arm gets tired before their do!

Minnie and Belle, we love ya!

Boo: Guess who got to go out for a 10 minute leash walk today!
Star Buddy: Who?!
Boo: THIS GUY!
Star Buddy: I'm so happy for you Boo!
Boo: I'M HAPPY! I mean, don't get me wrong, I love being up front, but nothing beats being outside!

Getting older is never fun, especially when you get slowed down by ACL surgeries...but that hasn't stopped Boo from staying positive! He is excited to start working on his recovery process!

Keep up the great work, Boo! We are always here for you, cheering you on!

We start in the middle of a story, a story you know well...The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, with mischief galore, about a boy and girl left home alone with nothing to do until a peculiar friend appeared at their door, the Cat in the Hat brought with him some games, but there is one in particular that I would like to recite:

...and then he ran out.
and, then, fast as a fox,
the cat in the hat
came back in with a box.
A big red wood box.
It was shut with a hook.
'Now look at this trick,'
said the cat.
'Take a look!'

Then he got up on top
with a tip of his hat.
'I call this game fun-in-a-box,'
said the cat.
'In this box are two things
I will show to you now.
You will like these two things,'
said the cat with a bow.

'I will pick up the hook.
You will see something new.
Two things. And I call them
Thing One and Thing Two.
These Things will not bite you.
They want to have fun.'
Then, out of the box
came Thing Two and Thing One!
And they ran to us fast.
They said, 'How do you do?
Would you like to shake hands
with Thing One and Thing Two?'

Here at Dog Star Ranch we have our own Thing One and Thing Two, Jed and Vladamir (Laddy)! Not nearly as mischievous or devious as Thing One and Thing Two, but much like the Things Jed and Vlad won't bite! No, no, they want to have fun! They want to run fast! They want to say "How do you do?" They want to lick your hand and play fetch all day!

But much like Thing One and Thing Two, Jed and Laddy are nearly identical! You've got to be extra careful in deciphering who is who! But we love these two boys! When they visit Dog Star, they are always a hoot!

We have some very exciting news!

Cayla (our previously very pregnant Star Buddy/Office Buddy) welcomed a handsome Liam Patrick into the world at 3:25 pm on Tuesday, August 9, 2016! He weighs a whopping 7 lbs 14 oz and he stretches out to 21 inches! Both him and his Momma are happy and healthy! He has one proud Papa and an excited big sister who is ready to play with her living doll!

Let's hear from his fur-siblings, Ska and Rango!

Rango: I'm going to be the best big brother ever! I will teach him how to behave!
Ska: And I will teach him how NOT to behave!
Rango: NO! To behave!
Ska: Yeah, I will teach him how NOT to behave.
Rango: I will teach him how to pick up blankets and beds and bring them to mom!
Ska: I will teach him how to dig holes and roll in mud!
Rango: I will teach him how to pick up balls and sticks!
Ska: I will teach him how to play in the snow!
Rango: I will teach him how to walk himself on the leash!
Ska: I will teach him how to poop in circles!
Rango: I will teach him...I will teach him...how to take naps!
Ska: I will teach him how to sit for treats!
Rango: I will teach him how to play with Charley!
Ska: I will teach him how to be adventurous!
Rango: We will both teach him how to be the best hooman/puppy ever!

We are so happy for our Momma Cayla and Caleb (the father) on their new little healthy baby hooman! You are now the owners of an adorable hooman/puppy!

Congratulations from your DSR family!

Trey C. 12/27/2013-08/06/2016

Another star was added to the sky...

Our dear sweet fur-friend Trey passed away Saturday evening surrounded by his Mom and Dad. Our hearts go out to his Mom and Dad who loved him very much! He will be greatly missed and his paw print will be forever on all of our hearts.

I Love You Best

So this is where we part, My Friend,
And you'll run on, around the bend.
Gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.

I will go on; I'll find the strength,
Life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
Share one last look, before I grieve.

There are others, that much is true,
But they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
Will remember well all you've taught.

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
The fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
Take with you this...I loved you best.

- Jim Willis

Piper found her way to Dog Star Ranch via our My Way Home Program in September of 2014, but soon after her arrival she was on her way to her fur-ever home (she was adopted near the end of September 2014)!

If you have ever met Piper you will know that she is spunky, full of energy, and she loves to be adventurous!

And although Piper may be small, she be fierce! She is one tough cookie, especially when it comes to playing with her big fur-friends like Maverick and Nova.

And what's so wonderful about Piper is that not only did she find her fur-ever home, but we got to keep Diane (her mom), our Bus Driver and wonderful Maintenance Woman who helps tremendously at making Dog Star so great! Now Piper gets to enjoy coming to Dog Star Ranch with her mom.

Piper, we couldn't be more happy for you! You have wonderful parents who love you (and feed you steak!), you have a great group of fur-friends to play with...life is good!

And you know what is even better?! It's your birthday! HAPPY 3rd BIRTHDAY, Piper! We love you so much and wish the most spectacular birthday ever!

P.S. Thank you for the No Bake cookies! They were delicious!

 Shadow

CeCe

This song goes out to Shadow and CeCe. They are from separate families, but both of them are moving out of state.

CeCe, you have been coming to Dog Star Ranch since 2012! Your one-of-a-kind personality won over all of our hearts. There will never be another CeCe quite like you! We will miss hearing you sing in Pup Paradise, or when you are running down the hallway/walkways out for your run. You never much liked having your picture taken while out on your run. It always took away from your sniff time. We will miss you so much, CeCe!

Shadow, you have been coming to the Ranch since 2015, and although our fur-friendship has come to an end too soon, we wish nothing but the best on your new adventure! We will miss your handsome face!

So this song goes out to you two!

"You'll Be In My Heart" by Phil Collins

'Cause you'll be in our heart
Yes, you'll be in our heart
From this day on
Now and forever more

You'll be in our heart
No matter what
You'll be here in our heart, always
