Hi, my name is Addie! I am an English Setter. Don't be fooled by my young looks and youthful energy, because I'm actually old, like 5 1/2 (plus five) years old. Did the Star Buddy say something? She told you, didn't she? Okay, so I'm 10 1/2 years old! But I act like I'm 5 1/2 and that is what I base my age off. Anyways, didn't you know that you aren't supposed to ask a lady her age! I'm just being silly with you, of course I don't care that you know that I'm 10 1/2! If you were a 10 1/2 year old English Setter that looked as good as me and ran and played like I do, you would brag about being 10 1/2 years old too! I use to come here for Daycare a lot when I was younger, but this was my first time boarding! What a vacation! I forgot how much fun this place use to be! And it has changed a lot since I've been here! But still, wow! What a great time! My Star Buddy's gave me all sorts of love, they took me for walks out in the park (and when the weather was nice, even the pond!), and then I got to come back inside to the Loft where I would take naps on the couch. The boys in my group were such gentlemen, they let me have the couch every time. It was always fun window gazing, I always saw so many interesting things. I had such a great vacation, but I think I said that already. It was relaxing and fun, I met up with old fur-friends, made some new ones, it was just great! And the best part was that I got to stay with my little sister. She had her own group of fur-friends because she is much younger, but it was still nice to go on vacation with her. Right, Briar?

My fur-friends and I had a GREAT time! Mom and Dad, I'm letting you know right now that I'm going to need to like sleep for like maybe three days straight because of all the fun I had! Right, Addie? I got to go to the pond and run and play with my best fur-friends! Rory helped me celebrate my birthday when I got here. I'm one now! Rory doesn't turn one until April 1st, and I can't wait to help her celebrate her birthday! I got to go to the pond today, and that was a lot of fun! Best vacation ever! It was my first time boarding and it was like so much fun! I felt so spoiled the entire time! It was just great! I feel like I keep repeating myself, but I just don't know what else to say besides that it was just such a great vacation! I had a great time!

Specialty Class

Saturday, April 16th, 2016 @ 10:00 am

April’s Specialty Class will be covering two of the most requested topics;
Leash Reactions and Recall with Distractions.

* Each session will be an hour in length and cost $20.00 per session (Sirius Star Members save 10%).  These will be great options for those who need to fine tune some issues, structured training dogs to work alongside the trainer, or those just looking for somethin’ fun to work on with their pup.
* Come dressed for the season.  We love to be outdoors, but if we are not able to then the classes will be held in the training arena (protected from the elements, but not heated).
* To hold the Specialty Classes we would need to have a minimum of 3 dogs reserved by the night before at 5:00 pm.

* Do you have suggestions that you would like to see in the upcoming Specialty Class session?  Send them over to train@dogstarranch.com for consideration.  Topics and dates will be posted the month prior for planning purposes.

Enjoy this adorable picture of Bella with her happy face because she is at the pond!

Two days ago this special girl celebrated her SECOND birthday! It is hard to believe that our Miss Bella is now TWO years old. This silly girl is still such a puppy at heart! It's an understatement to say the least that she is always excited to come to Daycare! Miss Bella can't get enough! She started coming to hang out with us in July of 2015, and she instantly fell in love. She is always happy and that makes us always happy as well! She has such a contagious happy positive personality.

Her favorite thing to do (especially in the summer) is go to the POND! She is always the first of her fur-friends to make it into the pond! Because when Bella knows that she is going to the pond, she flies there at full speed ahead! It is definitely easy to tell that Bella is her happiest at the pond, jumping in and out of the water, chasing her fur-friends around, and just overall swimming!

Happy SECOND birthday, Bella! We owe you a trip to the pond once it gets warm enough again!

Our SECOND birthday celebration is actually the celebration of TWO very special best fur-friends!
Our sweet puppies (puppies no more) started coming to the Ranch around the same time. And their birthdays are only TWO WEEKS apart!

Sweet little Briar started coming to the Ranch in June of 2015 and our little miss Rory started coming in August of 2015! It was an instant best fur-friendship. We feel so blessed to have been able to watch these two adorable fur-friends grow from sweet puppies to lovely young ladies!

Briar's birthday was March 18th and Rory's birthday will be April 1st! Happy 1st birthdays Briar and Rory!!

Fire and Ice
by Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

The Ice Queen's army made its advances under the cover of night and by morning the Queen had frozen the Apple Tree Blossoms' tears. And try with all her might, the valiant Mother Spring could not defeat the Ice Queen. Mother Spring's Oak, Pine, Birch, and Maple Warriors put up a heroic fight, but were ultimately rendered defenseless, their boughs hung low, shackled by the Queen they clanked in the breeze.

But Mother Spring is patient and she knows that the Ice Queen's spell will wear off, so she waits...

This is a story of The Day That Nothing Interesting Happened
by Molly Strabbing

It was your typical Friday morning. The sound of dog food being poured into an empty food bowl perked up my senses, it's smell slowly wafting over to my still closed eyes, nose wiggling to the various smells of my humans morning routine. With the grumble of my stomach, I knew that I could sleep no longer. Awake, I scramble into the kitchen where I act as if my parents never feed me, I engulf my food. Squirmy to start my day, I follow mom around until she is ready to chauffeur me to my favorite place.

The drive is uneventful. It isn't until mom makes that last turn, and I know what the last turn is because I can feel it in my bones. My heart starts racing with excitement. I know. Dog Star Ranch.

The walk up is the same. I am excited, she is telling me to calm down. Are we going to go to the park? No? Daycare? Okay!

My Star Buddy greets me with a scratch behind the ears, my favorite place. She knows all of my favorite scratch spots. Mom hands over my special shampoo. That means I'm getting a bath today, which I'm okay with because afterwards I look, feel, and smell FABULOUS!

Outside the wind chills my Star Buddy, but I don't mind. Maybe if she had fur she wouldn't mind so much either, or the least she could do is put her coat on. Sophia greets me at the yard gate. She is my best fur-friend. We started coming at the same time. After I squeeze my way into the yard all my fur-friends settle down and we all play a little here, rest a little there.

The Star Buddy did something interesting. She took all my fur-friends and just left me and Sophia in the yard! What good, Star Buddy?! It didn't make sense. Why would she leave us behind?

Soon after my so-called Star Buddy left with all my fur-friends, our other Star Buddy came out with a new fur-friend! She is a Boxer puppy, just full of energy, her name is Yaya. (Ask me if we had fun? Yaya, we did! *laughs*) Yaya sure brought the fun to our yard, we instantly clicked!

It was even better when our Star Buddy took us out to the big park for our run. Yaya is fast, but I am faster.

But other than that, nothing interesting happened.

Miss Stormy has something to say:

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

Today was my very first day at Daycare! Oh my! Where to begin?! I was a little nervous when I first got here, but my Star Buddy was so nice to me! She gave me a lot of love and hugs and encouragement! Then I wasn't so nervous anymore! She took me outside to go potty and then I got to go back inside to this really cool room where I met a few new friends! There was a silly looking smushy-faced fella named Oakley. But he was really nice and we played together!

And then! Oh Mom, guess what I did next? I went out to this BIG play area that they call a park! And all my fur-friends came with me and we got to run around and play with each other! It was so cool!

And then my fur-friends and I when we were done with our fun in the park, we went back inside where we got to take naps on the couch! But then I was woke up by a lady in blue. She wasn't my Star Buddy, she said it was time for my bath! Did I really need a bath, Mom?! I worked really hard at getting dirty and I wanted to show you my muddy paws! But then when she was washing me...oh did it feel good! But I still don't like baths! I'd much rather be dirty! But now I'm all clean and smell good so I like that too. I don't know how I feel about baths. They seem to have pros and cons to them. After my bath she let me go back to where my fur-friends were still napping, and baths are exhausting so I took another nap! Boy, today has made me tired that is for sure!

Daycare is so great and I had so much fun, Mom!! Can I come back?! Please please please??!!

"Howlin' For Dog Star" (Howlin' For You by The Black Keys)

I must admit
I can't explain
Any of these thoughts racing
Through my brain

It's true
Dog Star I'm howlin' for you

There's something great
With this place
The dogs
Love it here

Dog Star
Baby I'm howlin' for you

Mom and Dad
Can't you see
Dog Star
Got a hold on me

Like glue
Dog Star I'm howlin' for you

Throw the ball
Or a stick
Toss and throw

A game of fetch
Dog Star
Baby I'm howlin' for you

In Memory of Sam Berus:

Dog Star Ranch would like to thank the Berus family for sharing Sammy's entire life with us; she will forever leave her imprint on Dog Star Ranch.

Sam started coming to the Ranch when she was just a spunky puppy with a bit of a tomboy side, she could play with anyone, whether it be a small dog for snuggling or a group of rough and tumble boys to play with out by the pond. The older that Sam got, and the more that Carol spoiled her, the more Sam's princess side started to show. She would greet the staff with a bark and scratch to the leg to let them know that it was time for her famous "lap-time." In the beginning Sam had trained Carol to understand the command for lap-time where Sam would jump on Carol's lap for back scratches, kisses and then finally a treat; Carol then showed any new staff member the Sammy lap-time command.

Sam was very good at letting everyone know, be it person or dog, that she was the proud owner of the Ranch and she got what she wanted. Always! Throughout the eleven years of Daycare, Sam has shown most of our puppies the ropes, made too many friends to count, trained staff members on the ways of dog language, and smiled her way into all of our hearts. A dog's life is much too short, but it does make us slow down and reflect when we lose one that was such a huge part of our lives and reminds us to cherish our canine companions.

"They motivate us to play, be affectionate, seek adventure and be loyal." - Tom Hayden

There are several different approaches that I have to playing fetch with Bear. He is an expert at fetching, so I have to be an expert at throwing. Much of my skill is largely thanks to the wonderful hardworking Chuck-it, my fetching game would not be what it is without this nifty tool.

The first and most important step to Bear's fetch game is preparing him mentally. We achieve this task by having him sit and wait before opening his yard gate, and he cannot help but hop excitedly next to me because he spied the Chuck-it hiding behind my back. Next, he has to sit and wait at the gate to cross over to the Reserve Park where he has to sit and wait one last time before entering the park.

Once he is mentally prepared we are ready to play fetch.

My first approach to chucking the ball goes as follows:
- Stand feet together
- Right foot takes one step back
- Raise Chuck-it to ready position
- Simultaneously launch the ball while stepping right foot forward to give the ball a little more oomph

My second approach to chucking the ball goes as follows:
- Stand feet together
- Left foot takes one step forward, it is the anchor
- Standing sideways, raise Chuck-it to ready position
- As launching the ball, twist body forward with the throw

My third approach to chucking the ball goes as follows:
- Stand feet together
- Raise Chuck-it to ready position
- Launch the ball up, up, up

Sometimes I will throw grounders, but for the most part I like to give him really good pop flies because he really likes to catch them mid-air.

And how to tell when Bear is done playing fetch? He does exactly this...halfway between bringing the ball back to me he decides to tell me that he is done by laying down and just staring at me.

But really we could probably take a fifteen minute break and be right at it again. If I had a bionic arm Bear and I would play fetch literally all day. Literally.

DayStar of the Month ~ February 2016

DayStar of the Month for February 2016 ~ Ruger Sluis

Our DayStar of the Month for February 2016 is a sweet two-year-old boy who has been coming to the Ranch for Daycare since February 2015. What a unique coincidence! He has been coming to Dog Star Ranch for a year now, and he was unanimously voted DayStar of the Month!

Our DayStar of the Month is of course…RUGER SLUIS!

February sure was quite the month for you, huh, Ruger?! Where everything changed for the better for Mister Ruger! It was just a year ago that Ruger hesitantly walked through Dog Star Ranch’s doors. He was extremely shy at first and a little nervous as to where Mom and Dad were bringing him. Something something Dog Star something something Daycare something something It’ll be fun something something, but he wasn’t too sure. It was all so strange and new to him, he wanted to take his time warming up, and that was perfectly okay with us!

We were more than okay to take our time with Ruger because we wanted to make sure that he would be comfortable and have happy positive experiences when he would come for Daycare. So with a lot of love, patience, and treats, Ruger started to build up confidence and warm up to his Star Buddies and the Ranch!

We are so proud of Ruger and how far he has come within his first year of coming to the Ranch for Daycare! We’ve watched him grow more confident, become more comfortable, and make new fur-friends!

Every morning he excitedly greets his morning Star Buddy with a great big wet and sloppy kiss! Then he walks outside with her where he finds all his fur-friends happily waiting for him to join their yard so that they can greet him and play. Ruger and his fur-friends enjoy running and chasing and playing all sorts of fur-friend games out in the parks! And in the warmer months he and his fur-friends LOVE to take trips to the pond where they enjoy chasing each around the pond, splashing in and out of the water.

We are so happy to have Ruger as a part of the (very large) Dog Star family! From your Dog Star Ranch family, we could like to give you (Ruger) a BIG congratulation! on being unanimously voted Dog Star Ranch’s DayStar of the Month for February 2016!!

We love you, Ruger!

How cute is this little girl?! No, but seriously. Look at how adorable she is! Snow on her nose, big puppy ears, big puppy paws! Breslin is such a sweetheart! She sure does know how to melt hearts!
