Leap Year 2016 is finally here!

Why do we have it?

An extra day is added to the end of February every four years because of the Gregorian calendar's disparity with the solar system.

What does that mean exactly?

Well, a complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days, so leap years are added as a means to keep our clocks (and calendars) in sync with the Earth and its seasons. And since an earth year is not exactly 265.25 days long, Pope Gregory XIII's astronomers decided to lose three days every 400 years when they introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582. The math has worked ever since, but the system will need to be rethought in about 10,000 years' time, so we've still got a while!

Why does the extra day fall in February?

Apparently this is because February lost out to the ego of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus! Under his predecessor Julius Caesar, February had 30 days and the month named after him (July) had 31 days, August had only 29 days. So when Caesar Augustus became Emperor he added two days to 'his' month to make August the same as July.

Technically, a leap year isn't every four years! What?

There's a leap year every year that is divisible by four, except for years that are both divisible by 100 and not divisible by 400. The added rule about centuries (versus just every four years) was an additional fix to make up for the fact that an extra day every four years is too much of a correction.

What if you're born on February 29?

Well, the chances of having a leap birthday are 1 in 1,461. People who are born on February 29 are referred to as "leaplings", or "leapers". About 4.1 million people around the world have been born on the 29th.

And one last fun fact! Frogs are the official mascots for leap year and leap day. Maybe because they leap so much!

Do we have any leaplings or leapers out there?!

We hope you enjoyed these fun facts! Here is where we found them:

What a coincidence! Wasn't it just on Monday that we were celebrating another handsome Shepherd's birthday? And wasn't that handsome Shepherd one of Will and Hildi's best fur-friend? Clearly these three were meant to be best fur-friends, they all share the same birth-month! And within two days of each other, how special!

Brunhilde (Hildi) and Wilhelm (Will) started coming to the Ranch in September of 2015 (almost the exact same time as Rex too)! From the very beginning, it was love at first sight when we met Will and Hildi.

1. Because they have super awesome names
2. Because they are adorable
3. Because they are super cool!

And today these two kiddos turn TWO!

Will and Hildi are two of the most well-behaved German Shepherd's you'll ever meet! They are very good at minding their P's and Q's! I mean, just look at how well they got dressed and sat for their birthday pictures! Angels, I tell ya, angels!

To say that Will and Hildi are excited to come to Daycare is an understatement. Will and Hildi are always overjoyed to come to Daycare and visit all their fur (and human) friends at the Ranch! Hildi is always so excited that she can't help but whine with excitement when she sees her morning Star Buddy come up to the door to let her and her brother inside! And Will, well Hildi too, forget about getting a "Good morning" to dad because Will and Hildi already have you to the door! They know exactly where they want to go! Outside where their fur-friends are also very excitedly wait for them!

Will and Hildi are more than just siblings, they are best fur-friends! And what is better than celebrating your birthday? Celebrating it with your best fur-friend!

From your family here at the Ranch and all your fur-friends, we wish you both the happiest SECOND birthday ever!! We hope your day was filled with hugs and kisses and back scratches and many, many, many treats!

Happy birthday Will and Hildi!

Mack: Don't take my pictures!
Star Buddy: Why not?
Mack: I'm ugly!
Star Buddy: What nonsense! Why are you ugly?
Mack: Because I'm dirty!
Star Buddy: Where?
Mack: Mud, there is mud on my beautiful floppy ear...
Star Buddy: There is mud on your nose too.
Mack: What! Nobody will want to kiss my nose now!
Star Buddy: You do know that you are getting a bath, right?
Mack: Oh thank goodness! Because I feel filthy!
Star Buddy: And anyways, you would be handsome even if you were covered head to tail in mud.
Mack: Aww!
Star Buddy: But don't get any ideas!
Mack: Don't worry, I won't!

Spring is trying very hard to make its way to Michigan. Both human and fur-friends alike are anxiously awaiting its arrival. So many cannot wait until it is warm enough for the pond! And as the saying goes at the Ranch...April showers bring puddles, just puddles ;)

Happy Birthday REX!!

Our dearest Rex turns TWO!

Rexaroni (as we sometimes call him) started coming to the Ranch for Daycare in September of 2015! At first Rex was shy when it came to making new fur-friends, but once he warmed up to the Ranch he definitely came out of his shell! He has a great group of fur-friends that are always eager to see his happy face walk into their yard in the morning! Two of Rex’s best fur-friends are Will and Hildi (German Shepherds)! Rex gets very excited when he gets to come to Daycare and see his two best fur-friends! These three have so much fun together! Rex has some young pup’s that he has taken under his paw as well! This sweet goof loves to play with his puppy fur-friends Shane and Spyro as well! Rex is such a great role model for Shane and Spyro and he doesn’t mind helping them remember their manners, like a good “big brother.” Rex has made many fur-friends, and he is so happy that he gets to spend his birthday playing with all his fur-friends!

We wish you the BIGGEST and the HAPPIEST birthday ever, Rex! We hope all your fur-friends spoiled you with lots of fun, and I know we always spoil you with lots of treats, but since it is your birthday, we will spoil you with more!

Here at Dog Star Ranch we survive on several cups of coffee, puppy kisses, warm cuddles, and organized chaos. Not every day runs smoothly, but every day is full of furry kisses, back scratches, stinky surprises, yellow puddles, and that four-legged friend with that furry-adorable face looking at you with a love that is so very much unconditional. And that is what is most important.

So if you are having a rough day, just take a moment. Breathe. And look at your fur-baby and remember that they will always be there for you: to love, to listen, to hug, to cuddle...no matter what!

We all have days that test us, but take it from Beauregard, don't take like too seriously. Throw some snow on your face, stick out your tongue, and smile because tomorrow is a new day!

Will, Spyro, and Rex would like to share with you a handful of interesting facts that you may or may not already know. Who is going to start first?

Rex: I'll go first because I'm the oldest!
Will: We are like the same age!
Spyro: Then I should go first because clearly I am the youngest!
Rex: That makes sense.
Will: Yeah, okay, I can't argue that.
Spyro: Okay, so did you know that a group of Bats is called a Cauldron.
Rex: That sounds creepy!
Will: I wouldn't ever want to encounter a Cauldron of Bats! Okay, so my turn! My turn! Can I say this one?
Rex: No, I want to say that one! Say this one.
Will: Okay, so did you know that a group of Giraffes is called a Tower!?
Spyro: Because they are so tall!
Rex: Okay, my turn, so did you know that a group of Cockroaches is called an Intrusion?!
Will: And boy are they!
Spyro: You don't want those in your house! No thank you! My turn! Did you know that a group of Hyenas is called a Cackle!
Will: I wanted to say that one!
Spyro: Sorry!
Rex: I saw Hyenas on The Discovery Channel once, they scared me...and it makes sense as to why they are called a Cackle of Hyenas!
Will: I hate their cackle. Okay, Rex, your turn!
Rex: Did you know that a group of Porcupines is called a Prickle?!
Will: And DO NOT EVER TRY TO PLAY WITH THEM!
Spyro: But why?
Rex: BECAUSE THEY HURT YOU! They do not want to be your friend.
Will: Okay, so my turn?
Rex: Yeah.
Will: Did you know that there is a Murder of Crows in that tree over there?
Spyro: Is that what they are called?!
Rex: That is eery...
Spyro: This one is my favorite. Did you know that a group of Water Buffalo is called a Pot of Water Buffalo...like a Pot of Water...Buffalo! Ahahahahaha!!
Rex: You find that too funny.
Will: He is easily entertained.
Rex: He probably plays with his own shadow.
Spyro: I'm smarter than that!
Rex: There are two more fun facts. So Will and Spyro you can give the last ones.
Will: Did you know that a group of Owls is called a Wisdom, A Wisdom of Owls.
Rex: I've heard that Owls are very wise.
Spyro: Ahahahaha! This one is good. In the summer after it rains you can find a Squirm of Worms on the sidewalk!
Will: That was good!
Rex: So there you have it! We hope you enjoyed all our fun facts!
Spyro: You learn something new every day!
Will: So we hope we taught you something new!

Star Buddy: So what do you call a group of rowdy German Shepherd boys...
Will: You could at least call us handsome!
Rex: And intelligent!
Spyro: And charming!
Star Buddy: Oh boy...

So the last we left off our valiant knight named Bear was hired to track down a dragon who was living on her mountain without permission. Bear accepted the Queen's order and set out to the very top of the mountain where the dragon was hiding. When Bear got to the top of the mountain he could hear the dragon, and the dragon was crying. Cowering at the very back of the den was a little dragon, she glowed pink, and she was crying. The dragon's name was Pinky and she was hiding from the bad men who were hunting her, they had already caught her mom and dad. Bear told Pinky that the Queen would help her. So Bear and his new little friend started their journey down the mountain, but after a while they both got tired and decided to rest for the night, they decided that they would finish their journey at first light. Cuddled up next to each other they fell fast asleep, but when Bear woke up in the morning, PINKY WAS GONE! If only he hadn't fallen asleep! Bear knew what he needed to do, he needed to go back up the mountain and rescue Pinky!

Chapter Two:

Bear followed the tracks of the bad men all the way back to the cave where he first found Pinky, but a very bad storm was blowing in and it was getting colder and it was very windy, Bear couldn't follow the tracks of the bad men anymore because the wind had blown them away. He sniffed around the cave trying to pick up a scent, but the bad men must have decided to continue up the mountain.

Bear was worried that he wouldn't be able to find poor Pinky in time, but he hoped that the storm would slow the bad men down. Deciding that the bad men must have continued up the mountain, Bear did the same. The storm was becoming stronger and that would make his climb even more dangerous. Bear needed to hurry!

Bear ran as fast as he could up the mountain, the wind working against him. But Bear was valiant and Bear was brave and Bear NEEDED to save his friend Pinky! So he pushed hard against the wind and continued quickly up the mountain.

And that is when he saw it! A blinking pink light! PINKY! It was Pinky, she was signaling to him! Bear cleared his throat and shouted as loud as he could PINKY! PINKY! I'M COMING FOR YOU! The bad men turned around quickly, and stood frozen as they watched Bear barrel towards them! And Bear in his loudest, most ferocious voice shouted LET HER GO!

The bad men trembled, but they didn't let Pinky go. Bear knew that he would need to fight for her. He drew his sword, the bad men threw Pinky off to the side and then drew their swords.

Bear was not afraid. Bear was brave as he battled the bad men. Bear was faster than they were and he was smarter too. And before they knew it, Bear had defeated them both! He tied them together so that they couldn't escape. And he quickly ran over to where Pinky lay.

"Pinky, are you okay?" Bear asked.

"You came back for me!" Pinky smiled.

"Of course! You are my friend and I promised you that I would take you to the Queen so that she would help you find your family. I always keep my promises!" Bear smiled as he helped untie Pinky.

Bear was happy to have defeated the bad men and he was happy that he was able to rescue Pinky, but there was still a storm coming, so Bear knew that him and Pinky would need to find shelter, and they would need to find it soon. So Bear with Pinky riding his back, and the bad men dragging behind, quickly hurried back down the mountain to where the cave was. There they would be safe from the storm.

With Pinky cuddled up safely next to him, Bear made sure to stay away and keep an eye on the bad men, he wasn't going to make the same mistake twice, so he made sure to stand guard.

With the storm done, at first morning light Bear, Pinky, and the bad men continued their journey down the mountain.

When Bear reached the castle of the Queen, he told the Queen everything that had happened. That Pinky wasn't a danger, that she was hiding from the bad men and that Pinky needed the Queen's help in finding her mom and dad. The Queen agreed to help Pinky find her parents, and she threw the bad men into the dungeon. She also apologized to Pinky for sending Bear up there to harm her, that she misunderstood the situation and she promised that she would help all good dragons from here on out, and that her kingdom would be dragon-friendly!

The bad men told the Queen where all the captured dragons were and the Queen arranged a rescue team, led by Bear, to go rescue all the dragons!

And everyone lived happily ever after...and Bear and Pinky are still best friends!

The End!

A Dragon's Tale

Chapter One:

Once upon a time when dragons still roamed the earth, in the snow-covered cold mountains of Dog Star, there lived a valiant knight named Bear.

Queen Samantha ruled Dog Star very well. She was an excellent Queen, she was kind to her people. She protected them and cared for them.

Except Queen Samantha had one small problem that she could not handle. Dragons. So she hired Sir Bear to be her dragon slayer. She did not like that there was a dragon trying to take over her mountain without permission, so she ordered Bear to get rid of her dragon problem.

Now Bear had never slayed a dragon before, and he wasn't quite sure as to whether or not he actually could...or how.

But he was valiant. And a knight. So he bravely accepted the Queen's order and set out to the very top of the mountain where the dragon was hiding.

As Bear got closer to the mountain he could hear the dragon, but it sounded as if the dragon were crying. Why would the dragon be crying?

Bear spied the entrance to the dragon's den, and ready for a fight, he approached the entrance. Cowering at the very back of the den was a little dragon, she glowed pink, and she was crying.

Bear felt bad for the scared little dragon, so he relaxed himself and calmly asked the dragon what her name was.

"My name...my name...is Pinky..." said the dragon.

"Hello, it is very nice to meet you, I am Sir Bear, knight to Queen Samantha" said Bear. "Might I ask what you are doing at the top of Dog Star mountain?"

"I'm hiding..." whispered Pinky.

"What are you hiding from?" Asked Bear.

"There are bad men hunting me...they already caught my mom and dad..." said Pinky.

"Come with me back to Queen Samantha's castle, she will help you!" said Bear.

"But didn't she send you up here to..." Pinky couldn't finish that sentence.

"...yes, but once she meets you and she hears what happened to you, she is a very understanding Queen." Bear promised her. "She just didn't like that you were living here without permission, she likes to know who everyone is."

"Okay..." said Pinky. "I will come with you."

So Sir Bear and his new little friend Pinky started their journey down the mountain. It was easy for Bear to go up the mountain because he was by himself, but now it was taking longer because Pinky was so little, and she hadn't quite learned how to fly yet, so it was hard for her to go down the mountain. To help her, Bear let her ride on his back for a while.

It was getting dark though and Bear was getting tired, so him and Pinky decided it would be best to set up camp so that they could rest for the night and then they would finish their journey at first light.

Snuggled up next to Bear, Pinky quickly fell asleep. Bear, being the good knight that he was, tried to stay awake and keep guard. He wasn't sure if the bad men that were after Pinky knew where she was or if they were following them.

But the warmth of the fire and the warm pink glow from Pinky soothed Bear to sleep.

When Bear woke up to the sun rising...PINKY WAS GONE!

Bear became frantic! This was all his fault! If only he hadn't fallen asleep! He needed to rescue Pinky before it was too late!!

He found several tracks heading back up the mountain, so back up he went!

Will Bear find Pinky in time? Stay tuned next week for Chapter Two!

Murfee: I thought the Groundhog said that it was going to be an early Spring...
Star Buddy: I thought so too!
Murfee: Why is a Groundhog even predicting the weather?
Star Buddy: Tradition?
Murfee: Well, I'd like to write him a letter that tells him that it is 18°, that's the high, and that it is snowing again! And that maybe he should stop predicting the weather.
Star Buddy: Okay, you get on that.
Murfee: I'm being serious!
Star Buddy: I think he has email though.
Murfee: ...hahaha.
Star Buddy: You can actually get texts from him.
Murfee: He's a gopher, they can't text.
Star Buddy: Whoa, whoa, whoa! He is NOT a gopher, and if he heard you call him that...he might curse us with more winter!
Murfee: Oh whatever!
Star Buddy: You never know!
Murfee: ...sorry, Groundhog...
Star Buddy: Anyways, you like playing in the snow!
Murfee: Yeah, but not all year long!!
Star Buddy: Don't worry, Murf, Spring is coming.
Murfee: Okay...if you say so. I trust you more than I trust that Groundhog.

Bentlee: Did you just laugh at your own joke?
Charley: Maybe...
Bentlee: Where is Cooper?
Charley: He's over there, why? You don't want to play with me?!
Bentlee: I didn't...I mean...that isn't what I...
Charley: I'm kidding! Don't get...Bent...out of shape! *chuckles*
Bentlee: You're a reallllll comedian, Charley!
Charley: Okay, okay. I'm sorry. Let's go play with Cooper, yeah?

My commute to work consists of country roads, so I pass my fair share of pastures and fields. I've told Mister Rabbit to hurry up and cross the road, or to stay on his side, and I say good morning to the resident Hawk that sits up top of a dead tree at the corner of Green and 80th, looking for his breakfast to scurry across the field, and I have had my fair share of encounters with brave deer darting from field to field or field to woods.

This morning's drive was not all that different, that was until I was passing a pasture, where my eyes at first tricked me into believing that I was seeing a very large rabbit running inside of the cow pasture, but as I focused more on the running creature, I realized that it was a dog! A Sheepdog running as fast as its little legs could carry it! And as I drove past, I imagined that that little Sheepdog, out in that big ole pasture, was pretending that it was herding some sort of livestock. It was having the time of its life! And in that small amount of time that I watched this dog run along the pasture fence with so much freedom, zero responsibilities, I saw so much joy in its most purest of forms.

But this isn't the first time that I've seen such pure joy. No, no it is not. I see it every day when I come to work and take my fur-friends out to the park to run and play. The excitement that builds with each gate opened, almost like the satisfaction of water finally coming to a boil, that last gate opened, an uproar of bubbles, an uproar of four-legged furry-friends running out into the park barking their excitement for the whole world to hear. Not only is it a release of happiness for them, but for me too! They are not the only ones that enjoy their run. I'm enchanted by how they dart to and fro, roll around, run and play. What I would give to be wild and free like that again, but luckily for me, I can live vicariously through all my fur-friends, who thanks to the existence of Dog Star Ranch, can run wild and free!

We hope you all had as great as of a day as all your fur-babies!

Hiya! My name is Strider, I'm a Welsh Terrier! Today is my first day! I've never been on vacation before, so I'm pretty excited! The Star Buddy that greeted me this morning was super friendly, and she gave me A LOT of love! She called me a miniature Briggs, I don't know what a miniature Briggs is! Anyways, she took me out to my yard so I could go potty, and then another Star Buddy came in and loved on me too! They sure do love to give us scratchy's and cuddles! Then they said to each other that I would be best fur-friends with a Gus, something else that I have no idea what it is! But then I met the Gus and Gus is a puppy too! He is an Australian Shepherd and he is real fluffy. And then Gus took me to meet all of his other fur-friends! He has a lot of fur-friends, but they were all just so nice to me! And then when we were heading out for our run I passed a yard that had a bigger version of me in it! I asked the Star Buddy if that was what a Briggs was, and she said yes. Except a Briggs is a Airedale and I wouldn't be playing with him. So I said bye to him and went out with my fur-friends for our run! It was so much fun! I played with EVERYONE! And everyone played with us! It was such a great time! But running and playing can be such hard work, so the Star Buddy brought Gus and I inside to Half-Pint where we curled up with each other and took a nap, but then our other fur-friend Mochi came in and we all started playing again! Now Gus is away for lunch, but he said he would back! I am glad I have him to show me around the Ranch!

Gus: Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow! That means spring is on its way!
Nova: Well duh, it already looks like spring outside, you can see the grass.
Gus: Spring isn't on its way until Punxsutawney Phil says so.
Nova: You actually believe that?
Gus: Why wouldn't I believe a weather-predicting groundhog?!
Nova: Umm...because it is a weather-predicting groundhog...
Gus: You non-believer.
Nova: I'm logical. Science even says so.
Gus: Science schmience!
Nova: It's a German legend!
Gus: So!
Nova: I read that his predictions are decided ahead of time by those weird dudes in the top hats.
Gus: You can't believe everything you read!
Nova: Yeah, YOU can't!
Gus: Punxsutawney Phil has been predicting the weather for a long time! He is a professional.
Nova: There is no way! Groundhog Day is like a 130 year old tradition!
Gus: Yeah, he has to drink the magical punch in order to live for 7 more years. Duh.
Nova: I can't argue with you about this anymore.
Gus: Because I'm right.
Nova: ...
Gus: More fun facts about Groundhog Day:

1. Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather forecasting groundhog. The others are just imposters.

2. There has been only one Punxsutawney Phil. He gets his longevity from drinking "groundhog punch" (a secret recipe). One sip, which is administered every summer at the Groundhog Picnic, gives him seven more years of life. (Gus: See Nova, told you so!)

3. According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. (Nova: He can't predict the weather! He is a groundhog!)

4. For February 2, 2016, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow, so get ready for an early spring!

5. (Gus: Contrary to what Nova read...) Punxsutawney Phil's forecasts are not made in advance by the Inner Circle, after he emerges from his burrow on the 2nd of February, he speaks to the Groundhog Club President, and his proclamation is then translated for the world.

Nova: Gus, tell everyone where you found these fun facts...
Gus: groundhog.org of course!
Nova: Exactly!
Gus: You have your opinion, I have mine, let's just go play!
Nova: Deal!

DayStar of the Month for January 2016 ~ Nova Sarnowski

The DayStar of the Month for January 2016 started coming to the Ranch in September of 2014, and although he was shy at first, he sure has come out of his shell! Have any guesses? Here is another hint: when he is really excited he can’t help but break out into song! That’s right! Nova Sarnowski unanimously voted is our DayStar of the Month for January 2016!

As a regular in the Daycare program, it is always a joy to see Nova’s handsome face in the morning! He especially likes to sneak in some extra cuddles with his morning Star Buddies. But don’t worry, he doesn’t forget about his afternoon Star Buddies either! He makes sure to give them cuddles and kisses as well.

One of Nova’s favorite things to do is play hide-and-seek. His main hiding spots are either behind the couch or under the table in Pup Paradise, and if he is hanging out in Half-Pint, he likes to hide under the Half-Pint spots as well. His favorite time to play hide-and-seek is when all his fur-friends have to go outside for their potty break after naptime, he chooses to be sneaky and “pretend” to go with his fur-friends, but really he sneaks under or behind one of his spots and when the Star Buddy comes back inside there is Nova curled up on the couch! You just gotta love that smarty-pants!

Besides taking naps on the couch, Nova LOVES to be outside playing with his fur-friends in the park no matter the season! During the winter months, he loves jumping through the snow with his best pal and cousin, Maverick! Nova loves to bury himself in the snow to where you can’t see him at all, and it is just too cute to watch him bob his head in and out of the white fluffy snow. And during the warmer months, Nova loves chasing his fur-friends Piper and Mya around the park, or running in and out of the pond with his girls! And in the afternoon after he has had his fun in the park, you will be sure to find Nova curled up on the couch with his pals snoozing away!

Nova, you warm each and every one of our hearts. We all love you so much! You are truly one of a kind! Congratulations on being unanimously voted the DayStar of the Month! We love you, Nova!
