For those that have Facebook, this morning we were all informed that it was World Smile Day and to SMILE! But how many of you (myself included) didn't know that A. World Smile Day existed and B. what World Smile Day was even about. I mean how many quirky/unique/odd/pointless days are out there? Just this past Monday it was National Boyfriend Day (National Girlfriend Day is apparently August 1st), but according to www.holidayscalendar.com per my Google search for "weird national day celebrations" there are 274 weird holidays. It doesn't help that March 26th is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. Just some of my favorites that I came across include:
- National Rubber Duckie Day (January 10)
- National Dress Up Your Pet Day (January 14)
- Panic Day (March 9)
- National Alien Abductions Day (March 20)
- National Fun Day/Fun at Work Day (April 1)
- Embrace Your Geekness Day (July 13)
- National Lasagna Day ( July 29)
- National Cheesecake Day (July 30)
- National Watermelon Day (August 3)
- International Lefthander's Day (August 13)
- National Dog Day (August 26)
- Elephant Appreciation Day (September 22)
But that is just to name a few, and I am getting off subject, swept up in the world of weird national day celebrations.
Today is World Smile Day and here is what I learned:
World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday of the month in October every year. It was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. Did you know that Harvey Ball is actually known for having created the Smiley Face in 1963. I'm talk about THEE SMILEY FACE!
Harvey Ball created this infamous Smiley Face. However, as the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol. His original meaning and intent had become lost, and with that he created the idea for World Smile Day. "He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The Smiley Face knows no politics, no geography, and no religion. Harvey's idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we" (www.worldsmileday.com).
Much like the Smiley Face, our fur-babies/friends devote every day of every month of every year to making us smile. So on World Smile Day "Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile." Together we can improve the world, one smile at a time. Our fur-babies/friends do it for us every day, we can do it for one day, and one more day and one more day and one more day! Spread kindness! It's contagious!
