Winter Begins

in West Michigan
as early as November
with big fat flakes
falling to the ground
and melting away
by the next day
when temperatures reach
a high of fifty

when snow covered cars
need to be scraped off
and pre-started
when sidewalks need shoveling
and roads plowing
when meteorologists say
“It’s going to be a high of 19°F”
Winter Begins December 21st
but we’ve been dealing with it
as early as November

Dust of Snow
by Robert Frost

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

Michigan has laid a thick blanket of snow on Dog Star Ranch
We celebrate winter's coming with
Snow boots and snow pants and warm coats
Mittens and scarves and hats
Jackets and sweaters for the four-legged
Snowballs work as play and treats!

Oh My Dog

And I have adventures
I take him here
He takes me there
Oh my Dog
And I have disagreements
I tell him no
He does it anyways
Oh my Dog
And I have a connection
When I am sad
He comforts me
When I am mad
He calms me
When I am scared
He protects me
Oh my Dog
Brings me things
Shoes
Socks
Tennis balls
Toys
But above all
Oh my Dog
Brings me happiness

A puppy's Christmas

On the 11th day of Christmas my puppy gave to me:
11 unwrapped presents,
10 cards I should have posted, my wreath in
9 pieces,
8 tiny reindeer fragments,
7 scraps of paper,
6 soggy ribbons,
5 chewed-up stockings,
4 broken candles,
3 punctured ornaments,
2 mangled puddings
and the fairy off the tree,
On the 12th day of Christmas my puppy gave to me:
A dozen puppy kisses
And I forgot all about the other days.

Don't forget, daycare trips, a day of pampering at the groomers, a new collar, treats, or toys make great gifts for your puppy (of any age) and can all be found at Dog Star Ranch.

Santa Paws is Coming to Town (Santa Claus is Coming to Town)

You better behave
You better not bark
Better not whine
I’m telling you why
Santa Paws is coming to town

He’s making a list
And checking it twice
Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice
Santa Paws is coming to town

He sees you when you’re listening
He knows when you’re a krank
He knows if you’ve been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!

O! You better behave!
You better not bark
Better not whine
I’m telling you why
Santa Paws is coming to town

Santa Paws is coming to town!

Coco is making her wish list and checking it twice! She is writing to Santa Paws that she has been very, very nice!

Written by Bailey C. and Maybel O. consisting of "Baby It's Cold Outside", "Let It Snow", and "Take Me Out To The Ball Game"...they couldn't just pick one song to go with, so they combined all three! Enjoy!

Star Buddy, there's snow outside!
Oh the weather outside is delightful
Take me out to the dog park
Star Buddy, there's snow outside!
And the weather is so delightful
Take me out with my fur-friends
And since we love the snow
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!
Put on some gloves and a hat
I don't care if we ever go back
Let me run, run, run
In the park
If you get cold it's a shame
Aahh.
We don't show signs of stopping
And we've go fur for keeping us warm
For it's one,
Two,
Three gates to get out
To the good ole park
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!
Star Buddy, there's snow outside!

"Lean On Me" Bill Withers

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow.
But if we are wise,
We know that there's always tomorrow.

Lean on me when you're not strong
I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show.

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on...

DayStar of the Month for November 2016 ~ Bailey Cawley

Q: What do you get when you cross a dog and a calculator?

Our DayStar of the Month for November 2016 is an absolute sweetheart! She is certainly one-of-a-kind! When she first came to Dog Star for her Temperament Test in September, like most pups she was a little nervous, but that didn’t last for long! Popular to play with among her fur-friends, she is also always eager to please her hoomans!

So…What do you get when you cross a dog and a calculator?

A: A fur-friend you can count on!

And that is exactly what Bailey Cawley, our DayStar of the Month for November 2016 is! A fur-friend that we can count on!

Bailey LOVES coming to Dog Star for Daycare! She can’t ever get enough of her fur-friends, her Star Buddies, Groomers, and other Staff, and the parks! She is always ready to go out and start playing with her fur-friends. And she isn’t afraid to romp and roll around in the mud, if anything getting dirty is one of her most favorite things! But if she gets too dirty, she doesn’t mind so much going back to visit her Groomers to help her get all beautified before going home to Mom and Dad.

Although Bailey has been coming to Dog Star Ranch for the past three months, she has definitely already left a paw print on our hearts!

Bailey, you are sweet, kind, and goofy! You have such a wonderful and unique personality! We are so happy to have you as a fur-friend, and we look forward to continuing to watch you learn and grow! Thank you for being a fur-friend that we can count on!

Congratulations, Bailey! We love you!

Love,

Your DSR Family

Sampson doesn't care that it drizzled/rained all day yesterday, he is just happy that nature left him a very large, very muddy puddle to splish/splash/play/lay in! There is nothing that this big boy loves more than his bodies of water!

We are so thankful for all our fur-friends that came out today and played with us in this great fall weather!

Maggie the Road Block

With my tummy grumbling I set aside my work and excitedly got up to grab my lunch. As I turned the knob of the door to Pup Paradise, it immediately clicked back shut. Dumbfounded, I tried again only to be met with resistance. Confused, I tried one more time to push the door open only to have it shut back in my face. I peeked through the window to see the sweet face of Maggie S. down below looking back up at me. I begged for sweet Maggie to move so that I could open the door, but she merely continued to stare back up at me. I continued to beg for her to move so that I could open the door, but she remained a road block in my way. I tried several more times to push the door open in hopes that she would get annoyed at my pushing and move, but she refused! Stubborn as an Ox! Well, so am I! I was not going to let Maggie win. I simply could not let her win!

...I let her win and took a detour to the kitchen.

Maggie may have won the first round, but I was determined to win the second round (I told you I was stubborn too)! With my lunch in hand, I was determined to make her move from the door. I grabbed the knob to pull open the door and very politely asked Maggie to move. Nothing. She didn't budge an inch. I asked her to please move again. Nothing. She just stared at me, the look in her eye telling me that she was NOT going to move.

If being polite wasn't going to work, then fine! I was going to be "rude"! I tried to nudge my foot between Maggie's butt and the door. Nothing. Poke poke poke with my foot and a Maggie please move! Nothing. Maaaaaggie! Come on! Please move! Nothing. In my best teacher voice even Maggie PLEASE move. Nothing. So I said Fine, Maggie! Be that way.

Although I was determined to win, Maggie beat me again! That sweet face told me no, and as I walked back towards the kitchen, I looked back at her sad-eyed, she ignored me staring back at the door.

I still love you, Maggie...even if you didn't move for me <3 p="">

"So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it." - Willy Wonka

Willy Wonka could not have said it better. So often we have so much to do, but so little time. Then again, when we have nothing to do and so much time, we spend that time thinking ahead to all the future things that we are going to have to do! Just when you finish one To Do List, you are starting another for the next day!

It's always rushing through your morning routine because you're running late for work, or hurrying to finish one thing so that you can start on another. 24 hours in a day seems like a lot, yet it is never enough!

"Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why." - Eddie Cantor

We need to remind ourselves to make time to just HAVE TIME. To be able to just have time to breathe, to relax, and to be still. We live in a culture where everything needs to be fast. Fast food, fast service, fast internet... By finding the time to slow down, by actually listening to our body when it is trying to tell us to slow down, it allows us to reconnect with what matters most to us.

Take time to be a kid again! Sure raking leaves is a chore, but when you  have a giant leaf pile, you've got to jump in it!

Dog Veteran Facts

1. Dogs have been in combat with US soldiers during every major conflict, but they were not officially recognized until WWII
2. They are trained in bomb, weapon and drug detection, tracking, and to attack the enemy
3. Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX has been training sentry dogs since 1958
4. Today, more than 1,000 dogs are trained at any given time by a staff of 125 from all branches of military service
5. Complex training techniques are designed to utilize the dogs' natural gifts for focus and aggression to their advantage
6. There are about 2500 dogs in active service today and about 700 deployed overseas
7. 85% of military working dogs are purchased from Germany and the Netherlands
8. Bloodlines of these dogs go back hundreds of years, making these pups literally "born for the job"
9. Currently the other 15% of working dogs are USA born and bred, and the military hopes to increase this number
10. A fully trained bomb detection dog is likely worth over $150,000, but really these animals are priceless
11. With an average of 98% accuracy in their detection skills, the peace of mind they provide to the troops is immeasurable
12. Only about 50% make it through training
13. Military working dogs are not just chosen for their breeding or the keenness of their sense of smell, they must possess several other qualities
14. They must be free of physical issues like hip dysplasia and being highly reward motivated, and they must also be able to attack on command
15. Pups have actually been dropped from the program due to extreme stress at having to bite a human
16. Military dogs must have just the right level of aggression and excitability
17. They can get PTSD, war dogs experience severe emotional trauma during deployment, and for some it becomes too much
18. They mourn the loss of their handler and vice versa because of the remarkable bond that develops between service dog and handler
19. If a dog of war is lost in combat, he or she is honored by the entire squad. Feeding dishes are symbolically placed upside down and a poem called "Guardians of the Night" is read in their honor

5 Famous War Dogs

1. Chips (Collie-German Shepherd-Siberian Husky mix) who was the most decorated dog in WWII. He saw action in Germany, France, North Africa, and Sicily. Chips was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, and Silver Star for his actions. He returned to his home in Pleasantville, N.Y., in 1945.

2. Kaiser (German Shepherd) served in Vietnam under his handler Marine Lance Cpl. Alfredo Salazar. They did more than 30 combat patrols and participated in 12 major operations together. During a search-and-destroy mission, they were ambushed by enemy forces while on patrol in 1966. Kaiser was hit in the initial barrage and died while trying to lick Salazar's hand. Kaiser was the first war dog killed in action during the Vietnam War.

3. Nemo (German Shepherd) served in Vietnam under his handler Airman 2nd Class Bob Thorneburg. While on patrol at a cemetery near the company's airbase in Vietnam, the two came under enemy fire! Nemo took a round to his eye, and Throneburg was shot in the shoulder after killing two Viet Cong guerillas. Undaunted, Nemo still attacked the enemy, which gave Throneburg the precious minutes he needed to call in reinforcements. After Throneburg fell unconscious, Nemo crawled on top of the soldier's body to protect him from harm. The dog didn't let anyone touch his fallen handler; it took a veterinarian to remove Nemo. Both recovered from their wounds. Nemo was later given a permanent retirement kennel; he died when he was 11 years old in December 1972.

4. Smoky (Yorkshire Terrier) saw action in the Pacific during WWII. She was initially found in February 1944, abandoned in a foxhole in the jungles of New Guinea. Smoky was included in a dozen combat missions and survived more than 150 air raids. Smoky used her sharp sense of hearing to warn of incoming artillery shells. Her most famous exploits was at a crucial airstrip in the Philippine Island of Luzon. Smoky pulled a telegraph wire through a narrow 70-foot pipe, saving construction time and keeping works and engineers safe from enemy fire. When not in harm's way, Smoky entertained troops with a variety of tricks and self-taught antics. She died on February 21, 1957; she was 14 years old.

5. Stubby (American Pit Bull Terrier) is probably the most famous war dog. He was the only dog to be given the rank of sergeant. Stubby was found as a stray on the Yale campus in 1917, and smuggled to France during WWI by his adoptive owner, Cpl. John Robert Conroy. His heroic acts include participating in 17 battles, four offenses, and improving troop morale. He also used his keen senses to warn his unit of poison-gas attacks, incoming artillery fire, and to locate downed soldiers on the battlefield (they were also put to good use when he sniffed out and apprehended a German spy lurking in the trenches). Stubby died in his owner's arms in 1926.

Thank you to those that have served and continue to serve. Both two and four-legged.

Election Day Fun Facts:

1. In order to be elected president, the candidate must fulfill three basic criteria - be at least 35 years of age, be a permanent U.S. resident for at least 14 years and be considered a natural U.S.-born citizen

2. The final election is decided by the Electoral College, or a group of 538 electors. For a candidate to be declared president, he or she must have at least 270 of these votes under his or her belt

3. The oldest U.S. president to be elected was Ronald Reagan, who was 69 at the time, according to the Robinson Library. Clinton turned 69 on Oct. 26, while Trump is 70 years old

4. To date, 17 U.S. presidents have been elected for at least two terms. This includes current President Barack Obama. While 13 of them served a full two terms, three were re-elected but could not complete the second half of their presidencies: Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley and Richard Nixon. The 22nd Amendment set term limits for each sitting president after Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected for four terms

5. There have been 18 Republic presidents and 15 Democratic presidents so far. Four presidents identified as Democratic-Republicans, four as Whigs, one as a Federalist and one with no party affiliation - George Washington

6. The requirement to own property to vote was removed by the final state, North Carolina, in 1856, according to the American Civil Liberties Union

7. Congress passed the 15th Amendment in 1870 to give suffrage to African-Americans and other nonwhite men, according to the History Channel. Despite this, the South and parts of the North did not allow African-Americans to vote until the 1960's.

8. Victoria Woodhull became the first woman to run for U.S. presidency in 1972, according to Politico. This was almost 50 years before the 19th Amendment was passed, allowing women the right to vote in presidential elections in 1920

9. There have been over 200 women who have run for the position of president, according to PBS. These are mostly nominees of minor parties and candidates who ran for president before women achieved suffrage

10. Hillary Clinton formally became the first woman to receive a major party nomination after the Democrats named her this summer as their candidate for the 2016 election

11. Since the 1980's, women have been more likely to go out and vote than men, according to FactRetriever. While men have moved toward the more conservative Republican party since the 1960's, women ten to align themselves with the Democrats

12. NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station can vote in elections from orbit with the help of secure email, according to Space.com. This was the result of a 1997 Texas bill

DayStar of the Month for October 2016 ~ Chip Thayer

Our DayStar of the Month for October is a year old English Pointer who is as sweet as a chocolate Chip cookie; she is a delightful chocolate Chip pancake that can sometimes be as messy as maple syrup, especially if there are mud puddles. Her personality is as sweet as a bag of butterscotch Chips. And much like your favorite potato Chip, you just can’t get enough of her! She is all things wonderful!

That’s right! Our DayStar of the Month for October is none other than Chip Thayer!

The temperament of an English Pointer consists of but is not limited to the following:

-        Extremely high energy levels
-        Intelligent
-        Affectionate
-        Happily coexisting with other dogs
-        Somewhat boisterous

The temperament of a Chip Thayer consists of but is not limited to the following:

-        Extremely high energy levels
-        Intelligent
-        Affectionate
-        She happily coexists with other dogs
-        Somewhat boisterous
-        Happy
-        Excited
-        Playful
-        Good mannered
-        And friendly

Chip started coming to Dog Star Ranch as an excited/happy/playful pup! Her long legs as a puppy made her somewhat clumsy, but she has since grown into them!

Chip has the need, the need for SPEED! In 90% of the pictures taken of Chip, she is running or sometimes more like hopping, especially when her floppy go up!

Chip goes with the playful puppy group that loves to run and play as much as she does! Oftentimes she is called the Energizer Bunny because she just keeps going and going and going and going… Her Star Buddy’s even say that they have never seen her sleep/take naps!

In the summer months Chippy Dippy loves to go down to the pond with her fur-friends and splash in and out of the pond as they chase each other around! And we are excited to have our first winter with Chip! And I’m sure that she can’t wait to be dressed warm in a coat, which will definitely make it easier to find her hopping through the snow!
Chocolate Chip, you hopped your way into our hearts the very first day that we met you! Your energetic/hyper/happy personality entranced us! It has been a wonderful six months getting to know you and watching you grow into the beautiful young lady that you are today!

Congratulations Chipster on being nominated the DayStar of the Month for October 2016, you deserve it!

We love you!

Love,

"These Humans are telling me that there are 53 days until Christmas. Umm...excuse me, but we haven't even had THANKSGIVING yet! ONLY AFTER Thanksgiving can you start talking about CHRISTMAS! ONE HOLIDAY AT A TIME HUMANS! I mean just yesterday I was getting dressed up for HALLOWEEN! You people and your holidays. The only important holidays/days that you need to be celebrating are dog holidays and days. We are thee most important out of them all! And all your holidays should revolve around us. So on Halloween, for however many pieces of candy you get, we get in treats. On Thanksgiving, if you get a delicious turkey, we get a delicious turkey. And pie. I know you guys eat pie! And on Christmas, this is the holiday where you get presents, right? Yeah, well, I want presents too! And treats! Toys. I need toys. Remember this! Because I will be expecting all of this to happen. And if it doesn't! Well, I know where to find a lot, A LOT of fur-friends! That's right. Fear me for I am Maggie!" - Maggie

Well, that is what Maggie has to think about THAT!
