Guess who made it in today??

So many people in the area are snowed in, some of our staff included.  There are a few parents that made it out and about today!  Check out who we shared the day with today:

We do apologize, but when the weather is, well, like this, we do all of our runs and play times out in the indoor arena which has a sand floor.  The lighting in the arena is currently less than favorable for photos so until we can venture back out in the great white outdoors, we won't have many photos to share.

To all Dog Star Ranch Park Members / Winter Storm of 2014 Continues...

This blustery winter has been far worse than we have experience in the past few years.  Please, please take that into consideration when you are out and about in West Michigan.  As a reminder, we are a large 48 acre canine care facility, BUT we are still a small business.  We are doing our very best to keep up on the gates, parks, and trails.  We have some requests to help on park upkeep and reminders:

**  If you come to a park gate that is not yet cleared, please DO NOT force the gate open!  When a gate is forced open, it damages the gate's integrity along with the hinges.  It then makes more work for the gate to be repaired than it was in the first place to dig it out.  Most of the gates have been raised to make it easier for them to open once the snow has been moved.

**  If you do decide to come and use the parks, please do so during office hours and ALWAYS CARRY A CELL PHONE!  If you run into issues call us in the office and we will come out to help you!

** If your dog is a Dog-Gone-Waggin' bus rider, make sure to check on Facebook.com or wzzm13.com under the school closings.  If schools are closed in your area, the bus will not be running to you.  We will also post closings on the wzzm13.com under Dog Star Ranch

*** Major Reminder:  The Active Dog Park is still closed.  We had a vehicle go through the fence causing damage along about 60 feet of fencing.  We did the best repair we could in the winter, but now with this snow, it makes a very dangerous spot (easy opening) between the parks and Whitehall Road.

** If your dog(s) is driving you bonkers and they need to run, we have a couple of options that may help:
          1.  Doggie Daycare - when dogs come for the day, they still get to play, but we utilize our indoor arena.  This arena is a 20,000 square foot arena that is not fully completed.  This provides us with a sand floor, four walls, and a roof to run dogs that are here to exercise and provide them safety from the winter elements.
          2. Socials - these socials are free to park members and held every Wednesday at 6:00 pm and Saturdays at 9:00 am.  You can come and join the DSR trainers and take a walk in the arena.

*** If you ever want updates on the DSR park's status or updates, please make sure to follow us on Facebook.com or check the blog regularly.  If we have things we need to post and share we will always do so in those two locations.  At the Ranch our main concern is your's and your pup's safety and health.  Please be careful out there everyone and monitor your dogs closely for any concerns during this frigid temperatures and winds.

DSR Dog Park Weather Updates / Please DO NOT ATTEMPT TO COME & USE THE PARKS TODAY! Stay home, safe, and warm!

All of us at the Ranch HIGHLY encourage park members to not try to come out today!!!

With the blowing and the continued snow fall it is just not safe for the humans or the dogs to try to come for a walk in the parks.

The only park gates that we will attempt to keep up on is the main gate and Special Use Park. Due to the blowing and wind, the snowmobile will not be out until tomorrow.

Please, Please be extra cautious out on the roads and monitor for your furry friends when they are outside!!

No photos today :(

With the more than unpleasant temps, all the runs today were done in the arena.  The lighting in there is less than ideal for photos so we don't have any to share for today.  We do apologize for that, but we wanted to give the pups a chance to play and be out of the elements.

When it's this cold, we encourage members to come when we are open, always carry a cell phone, and call us if you run into issues.

Also, make sure to take advantage of the Socials!  They are on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm and Saturdays at 9:00 am and they are in the arena!  They are also free to park members.

Dog Star Ranch DayStar of the YEAR 2013 is Miss Sammie Berus!!!

DayStar of the YEAR ~ Runner Ups ~ 2013

Trying to pick just one DayStar of the Year is a nearly impossible task to do!  There are so many faces that we love and this year we decided to share two runner ups to sit along side the DayStar of the Year.

When we thumb through our files of photos, we can’t help but smile when we see a particular happy black, generally blurry, face barking right back at us!  She is known to be a demanding fetcher and top notch at the doggie paddle.  This particular girl became a beloved part of the Ranch family in 2004 and since that summer, we have been fortunate to share in many, many happy memories with her.  Our Thursdays just wouldn’t be the same with out you!  Miss Sophie White is one of our favorite all time Black Labrador girls and we are so very happy to announce that you are a runner up for the DayStar of the YEAR for 2013!

Oooo, the Dog-Gone-Waggin’ must be turning right down the driveway and a particular passenger is going to make sure everyone knows that they are nearly to the Ranch!  This happy boy is one in a million!  He first walked through the Ranch doors in the fall of 2011 as a happy Pittie boy that was all smiles and only wanted to play!  Today he is nearly completed his road to recovery from an ACL surgical repair back in August.  Even through all required down time and low impact exercise (one on one time with the DSR trainers and the treadmill) his spirits never dropped!  He is still the happy, fun lovin’ boy he was that first day in 2011.  Pat, thank you for sharing your boy, Mr. Miles Botbyl with us!  Our week wouldn’t be the same without him and we are happy to announce that he is a runner up for the DayStar of the YEAR for 2013!

DayStar of the YEAR ~ Samantha Berus ~ 2013

Our beloved Sam had been with Dog Star Ranch since the very beginning and our staff could not imagine a better candidate to celebrate 2013 with than her.  Sam has stolen every heart since she first stepped through our doors in 2004. The years may have whitened her face, but her spunky puppy attitude has remained. Sam is the sole inventor of the famous “lap time” that now plenty of dogs have put into their daily routine, and she does not go one day without her lap time; in fact if it was up to her she would spend all day on Carol’s lap.  It took some time, but she now enjoys lap time with anyone who has an empty lap!  Sam is not only a park member, but is also a founding DSR owner; if you ask her that is.  Dog Star Ranch would not be the same if Sammie wasn’t a part of our family.  It is with a great honor and love that we present Ms. Sammie Berus as Dog Star Ranch’s DayStar of the YEAR for 2013!  May we have many, many more happy years together!

What happens during a day of Dog Star Ranch Doggie Daycare?

Do you ever wonder what a typical day of doggie daycare at the Ranch is all about??  It’s me, Murfee, checking in and I’d love to tell you all about it!!  First things first, I arrive to the Ranch ready to go!  I know my mom can bring me as early as 6:30 am, but I’m not awake that early!  The mornin’ Star Buddy takes me back to one of the community yards so I can do my personal business before joining my play groups.  As dogs continue to come, the Star Buddies figure out what play group is going to be ideal for me.  Now, ya’ll know me, I want to play!  Give me the active runners and wrestlers and I’m a happy, happy boy!

Generally between 9 am and 11 am, the Star Buddy rounds me up along with my four legged pals and the Star Buddy Walks begin!!  This field trip is an hour long off leash play time with my buds either in the Star Buddy Park, Special Use Park, or Cody’s Cove (only in the summer).  These parks range from 6 to 8 acres in size and are fully fenced in so I can run and play and my family knows I’m safe and havin’ fun!  The Star Buddy stays with the group walking with us to make sure we are all playin’ okay, minding our manners, and snappin’ some photos to share the fun.

For those of you pups that would prefer not to be out in the cold, we also have the indoor arena that they use for our runs!  That allows you to play and run, but be more protected from the weather.  Sometimes, on the really cold days, we may start outdoors, but may move the run indoors depending on how the group is doing.

Once our run is winding down, our Star Buddy starts roundin’ us up and back towards the building we go!  During the summer months, we may be able to spend a lot more time outdoors in our community play yards with personal pools to play in, but with temperatures being below 10 degrees, it’s back inside we go.

When we are not on our runs, there are several different places we may be.  Two of our more low key indoor rooms are the Luxury Loft or Pup Paradise.  They are both good fro some couch and snuggle time.  We also have areas set up in the indoor arena so we can still play, but not be out in the frigid temps.  Some of us take a personal break mid-day to relax from all the mornin’ fun.  Throughout the rest of the afternoon, there are a couple other times when the Star Buddies take us out to the community yards for a potty break.  How long we are out there depends on the weather and rotation with the boarding guests.  Fifteen to twenty minutes is usually a good estimate, but sometimes it is longer in the summer when the weather is nicer for us to play outside.  Whenever we are in our groups with other dogs, there is always a Star Buddy watchin’ out to make sure things are going well and everyone is comfortable in their groups.

Prior to going home, the Star Buddies make sure we go to the Grooming Salon for a blow out so that we don’t take the entire sand and dirt from the parks home with us.  Some pet parents participate in the Spruce Up Special! that provides us with a full bath before we go home.  That way we smell nice and fresh regardless of how dirty we were earlier in the day!

Once my dad picks me up, it’s snooze time in the back seat of the truck all the way home!  I always love my visits to DSR doggie daycare.  I get to see my friends, but two and four legged.  I love my runs in the park, especially when I can swim in the summer.  If you ever have questions about the DSR doggie daycare or want more information on options and packages, make sure to call the girls at the Welcome Desk and they will take good care of ya!  That’s all from me for today!  Happy New Year from all of us at the Ranch and STAY WARM out there!

Signing off for today!

DayStar of the Month ~ December 2013

DayStar of the Month ~ December 2013

Round of applause, please … It has been voted that Georges Sprott will be crowned the DayStar of the Month for December 2013!  Georges started coming to the Ranch in 2011 and shortly joined the daycare program and park members.  Don’t let the fact that Georges is a Poodle lead you to believe that he likes to be a prim and proper boy!  He may look the part, but he loves to get as dirty and muddy as his Labrador counterparts.  Quite often he is the first one to find the mud puddle or the first one to jump in the pond (or the snow drift for that matter)!  “Let me loose and let me play!”  Georges is a rock star when it comes to the grooming salon.  He may play hard, but it feels good to get freshened up at the end of the day.  Georges is an all around great boy at the Ranch.  Thank you for sharing him with us and we are so happy to say that he was chosen as the DayStar of the Month for December 2013!
