DayStar of the Month of September ~ Quinn Lowry

Looks like for this month we have another Dog-Gone-Wagginer! The DayStar of the Month of September is Quinn Lowry. Quinn has been coming to DSR since 2007, but we didn’t start to see him consistently until 2010. Quinn started out having an issue during transportation and he would get car sick. So we thought… why not try the Dog-Gone-Waggin’ and see if we can help him overcome the car sickness. It worked! Now Quinn comes every Tuesday with his favorite pal, Kevlar. He also comes out and uses the parks and enjoys the Socials in the park. Quinn has been a great boy that we have had a pleasure to get to know and we look forward to seeing every Tuesday. Congrats to Quinn as you are the DayStar of the Month of September 2011!

Happy Thursday all you Fabulous DayStars!!

Cayman, you will be greatly missed by many. Thank you for being a wonderful companion and friend to so many humans and canines!

It is with a very heavy, saddened heart that we say fare well to a very dear friend and companion. This past weekend, Cayman, a wonderful golden, joined those before him as an angel. Cayman was more than a regular to the DSR parks!! He came out twice a day with his parents to run and swim in the parks and trails since 2009. No leash was needed, when he got here he knew right where the entrance gate was! He had so so many walking buddies in the parks that will greatly miss him and there wasn't a single dog that didn't enjoy playing with him. He came in regularly for his spa/grooming day and was a favorite among the grooming salon. All of us at DSR are so very saddened and sorry to hear that Cayman is no long with us. He was way too young to leave and will be greatly missed by so very many. Thank you for sharing him with us these past couple years.

NOTE: This golden pictured is not Cayman, but that smile reminded me of his happy heart and waggin' tail.

Fall Color Tour to support the DSR My Way Home Program

Also find this event on the DSR Facebook page! We hope to see you there! Leading up to the event I'm encouraging people to take pictures of them and their dogs enjoying the parks and the changing colors. Email as many as you would like to and I'll add them to the DSR Facebook Fall Album! I hope to really fill this album up so keep them coming!!

Happy Thursday Everyone!!

Also a quick lesson in nail trimming and a reminder of our annual nail packages to make it easier and cheaper!

A special request to anyone who may be in Grand Haven this Saturday :)

Earlier this summer, Jen was asked to paint a Rocket Fish that would be displayed during the summer months in downtown Grand Haven. This Fish was donated by Just Dogs and Dog Star Ranch. It's home this summer has been in front of Just Dogs store front. The hopes of this Fish is to raise funds for Pound Buddies Rescue.

This Saturday, Sept. 24 from 12pm ~ 3pm in Grand Haven they will be voting for the best Rocket Fish and I would like to encourage you to vote for our Canine Rocket Fish (Fish #44). Thank you in advance for your support. Also make sure to check out all the other Rocket Fish as many places did a fantastic job!

"The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him, and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself, too.--by Samuel Butler, 1912

"Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made. "Roger Caras

Have you thought about adding a new dog to your family??

Adding a dog to your family can be a fun adventure, but also needs to be well thought out. Before getting a dog, I recommend scheduling an appointment with our trainer to discuss what type of dog would be best in your family with your lifestyle. Do you want a dog that you can jog with? Are you a boater and want a water companion? Do you live on a farm in the country or a condo in the city? There are so many questions that we can ask to help determine what would be a good match for you.
Through our DSR My Way Home Program we can take it even one step further... Once you have had a consultation with our trainer, we can then go to Vector Control and see if there is a dog there that might fit the description. We can pick out a couple, bring them back to DSR and get to know them a little better and introduce them to you. Once we have found a match, we can put the dog into the program and prepare them for your home and family. We love being able to get dogs out of the pound and match them with their forever families!
Do you already have a dog that you are interested in, but not sure if your current dog will be happy with the addition? Schedule a day of doggie daycare for your current dog(s) and have the potential new dog come too! We can introduce them on neutral ground and help determine if they will co-exist in your home.
ALWAYS REMEMBER that when you bring home a new dog, there will ALWAYS be a "honeymoon" phase. It's generally the first couple weeks when a dog is in a new home and they are getting acclimated to their new life. You may run into challenges, but remember to work through them with positivity, patience, and help if needed. Dog Star Ranch is always there to help keep dogs in their homes in so many ways. Make sure to use us as a resource and assistance as needed. Make sure to get in touch with us if you have any questions about adding a dog to your family or if you have some issues you want to work through with your current dog or pack.
Give your dog somethin' to bark about today at Dog Star Ranch!

Fun Fact of the Day: 10 of our 30+ DayStars today started their journey in life through a rescue organization :)

And the Stats from today's game are as follows... It looks like the Golden Retrievers WIN with 7 today! Actually, I want a re-count as the Mixed Breed Dogs win with 10! So we'll give the Goldens the win for the Breed Division. We have a group of huntin' kids (Pointers, Springers, and Brittanys) that make up 5. The Tallest Dog Award goes to Kevlar, the Anatolian Shepherd. The Shortest Dog Award will be split between Rosie, the Cockapoo, and Maizie, the Mini Schnauzer. The Youngest Dog Award goes to Rango at under 5 months. And it's not polite to do the Oldest Dog Award so I'm going to skip over that one... The Most Wrinkles Award would be between Bear, the Shar Pei, and Gracie, the Bulldog. Today also one of the largest number of dogs on the Dog-Gone-Waggin'! Today Patt has 7 Stars, all except Miss Rosie are large dogs, on the Waggin'! Today was an excellent day to come to Doggie Daycare at DSR. Thanx for sharing your kids with us and we'll be back online tomorrow!

Having trouble seeing the blog pictures? I wanted to remind you that if you "click" on the pictures, it will enlarge them so you can see them more clearly :)

Farewell to some wonderful friends...

Over the last few days we received some not-so-happy news. Two of our dearly loved canine friends (from two different families) have become angels... It is with a very heavy heart that we say until we until we meet again to these very beloved companions and send lots of hugs to the families...

Cannon was such a sweet soul with a true personality of a labrador! He loved his romps in the parks and the pond but equally loved this couch time. He was never seen without a smile on his face and a lot of happy wags in his tail. All of us at DSR will greatly miss the special boy and we feel fortunate that we were able to see him one more time prior to him leaving. Thank you so much for sharing him with us for these past years. Now he is cheering for the Maize & Blue from up above...

Griz was also a labrador, through and through. He always came in several steps ahead of his owner ready to stay for his vacation away from home. At DSR the pond was his favorite place to go and he could spend his whole day there if we'd let him. Thank you so much for sharing him with all of us at DSR and you will definitely be greatly missed.

I heard a quote a while back that I feel is perfect to share, although I don't know who orginially said and I may not say it perfectly, but the only fault that a dog has is that they don't live as long as we do. So very true... All of us at DSR are sending lots of hugs, prayers, and happy thoughts to both Cannon and Griz's families.

Monday Tuesday Combo

Monday was a bit of a crazy day from the eyes of the Star Buddies so I apologize for the delay in the blog! This can be said for both days though... The dogs had a blast! More swimming was done yesterday as it felt more like August than September, but today the brisker air called for fun in the Star Buddy Park. Fall is definitely in the air and it gives us a little extra go than the heat and humidity of the summer. Thanx for spending the days with us and we'll see you all again tomorrow (I'll try to be more timely tomorrow with the blog). Have a great one everybody!!

Have you thought about seeing if your dog can be a Canine Good Citizen or a Therapy Dog??

The Canine Good Citizen testing is an evaluation done by the AKC (dog does not have to be a purebred or registered) and tests a dogs general manners. Is your dog a good canine citizen in the community? Does your dog mind their manners with distractions and new people?

Have you thought about giving back to our community through therapy work? Doing canine therapy work is so very rewarding and a wonderful thing to do with your dog.

We have a Risin' Star Advance Obedience Class starting this Saturday, September 10 and in this class you'll definitely work "outside of the box." During this class you'll be given an opportunity to take the CGC test and we'll set you in the direction to take your Therapy Dog certifications. If you have questions about the CGC test, Therapy Dog work, or the Advanced Class please give us a call at (231)766-0444 or email Jen at

Dogs Life
Why do dogs sniff each other’s behinds?

Maybe for them, it’s a meeting of minds.

What better way to tell where one’s been?

Or if they should go that way again?

Why do dogs love to roll in dead things?

Maybe because of the perfume it brings.

The longer that opossum’s been lying there rotting,

The more dogs you’ll find that way trotting.

Why do dogs always slobber and snore?

Maybe because they enjoy nothing more.

Few creatures know how to sleep like a dog.

Except maybe my husband, the bed hog.

Happy start to September and who could be the DayStar for the Month of August 2011 be???

Today was a wonderful day to start out the month of September! Today we had 23 DayStars here and our two My Way Home dogs, Dante and Nala, made sure to join in the fun and excitement too!

For this month we have the very special Miss Rosie Zolik as our DayStar for the Month of August. Rosie is a park member and also comes to daycare three days a week. If you ever see the Dog-Gone-Waggin’ coming from Grand Haven with a cutie little navigator riding shoot gun, that’s Miss Rosie! When she started coming to daycare she was a little on the shy/reserved side, but it didn’t take long for her to open up and have a blast! She always comes right in the front door with a big smile on her face and a lot of wag in her tail! She also participates in our training programs and she loves to learn new things! Congrats to Miss Rosie for being the DayStar for the Month of August 2011!
