What can we learn from our dogs???

Labrador retrievers seldom meet anyone they wouldnt call "friend." They're four-legged proof that to make a friend, we must be one first.

"We should shed encouragement just like collies shed hair: everywhere, all the time, in great gobs that cling to everyone we come in contact with." -Chuck Miller

Occasionally dogs like to roll in substances that don't endear themselves to us. The rolling canines end up stinking, sticky, or a combination of both. There are substances and places we need to avoid too. They can make as foul a mess of our lives as our garbage-rolling dog.

"Dogs come when they're called;
cats take a message and get back to you later."
-Mary Bly

Some natural ways to deal with fleas and ticks!

Spring (actually summer) is here and that means all the “creepy crawlies” that we call fleas and ticks are back in action. Are you looking for all natural ways to repel these problem pests? Here are some natural options in flea control and repellants…
If you enjoy landscaping, look to using cedar mulch. Cedar is a natural repellant that can keep the fleas out of your yard. You can also plant a fern like plant called Tansy. It has low levels of toxicity so make sure your pets don’t eat the plant, but it also works as a repellant for your yard.
Cedar can also be made into a natural flea collar! Combine 4 drops of cedar essential oil (Cedrus atlantica) on a fabric collar, piece of rope, or bandanna. Seal in an airtight container or bag and leave for overnight. It permeates the cloth around the dogs neck and works as a natural flea collar. Here is a recipe for a homemade flea spray. Take a lime or lemon and slice it very thinly. Add 2 cups of water and boil. Allow to cool over night then place in a spray bottle. Use as a natural topical spray on your dog. Make sure to get problem flea areas such as behind the ears and the base of the tail. Generally lasts for half a day so reapply as needed. Eucalyptus essential oil is also a great natural oil that can be combined with to make a topical repellant. You can also create a Rosemary conditioner with 1 tsp. dried Rosemary (or 1 Tbs. of fresh) and 1 pint of water. Combine the Rosemary and the water and steep for 10 minutes covered. Strain and allow cooling to body temperature. Pour over the dog as a final rinse. This promotes a glossy coat and repels fleas.
Here are a couple things that you can add to your dog’s diet to help repel fleas and parasites internally. Add 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar to your pet’s daily water bowl. You can also add 1 tsp. of brewer’s yeast (make sure its not baking yeast) per 30 lbs. body weight to your dog’s food.
Fleas and ticks are nasty little things but there are lots of options to help control and repel them naturally rather than jumping right into harsh chemicals. For more information and other natural remedies, check out “Dr. Picairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats” by Dr. Richard (and Susan) Pitcairn, DVM, and “Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats” by CJ Puotinen.
