Structure DC for 3/31

video

Tuesday 3/31

What a great way to finish out the month of March! Plenty of happy dogs enjoying the crazy spring weather. You'll see a lot of wet pups, but none of them went to the pond today! That was all from playing in the puddles. Some show their fun all over their fur more than others, but everyone had a great time!

Be looking for notes/updates on the Star Structured Daycare and training today from Kevin to be posted later...

TGIF ~ March 27

Well, the camera only really works when the battery is charged :D Oops... Sorry, no photos for today. We can definitely be thankful for the sunshine and spring like weather today. Spring might actually be here to stay (fingers crossed). Today we had a wide range of DC guests from the gentle giants (Bosley, Stella, and Missy) to the youngin's (Kahana, Molly, and Lexi). Juno, Missy, Tucker, Tre, Stella, Konig, and Bosley were the first to hit the ground runnin'. Kahana, Elf, and Molly were next in line. Meggy, Molly, and Konig made some new friends in that are boarding too. Lexi and Utah joined a different group of boarding stars. All in all, it was a fabulous day! It was a great way to kick off the weekend.
Reminder: Saturday Morning Social from 9:00a-10:ooa in the Small Dog Park. Rain or shine! See the March 19 blog for the specific details.

Tuesday, March 24

It may have been gloomy (weather wise), but it was all sunshine and smiles with the daycare dogs. They had a fabulous day running and playing all over the parks. With the weather being a bit cooler we avoided Cody's Cove, but there were plenty of water and puddles to play in.

Monday March 23

It really does feel like spring might be here to stay! All the dogs had a wonderful day. We even had a DC newbie, Miss Kahana, and she didn't take long to mix into all the Daycare fun! Bennie wanted to say "Hello" to his mom in Florida. He's really feeling like Bennie again and he's having a great time with his pals. Meg and Molly wanted to send some hugs to their mom and her human daughter as she bounces back from surgery. The girls are really enjoying themselves and will have lots of Ranch stories to share when you get home.
For those who are interested, don't forget about Star Structured Daycare tomorrow along with the Saturday Morning Social (round 2) on Saturday. Want to know more about your training options when your dog is in Daycare? Just ask! We're here to help and we want to help you make the most out of your relationship with your canine companion(s). We also have some classes starting in April (after spring break).

Starting this Saturday ~ Saturday Morning Socials

Have you ever wanted to know the proper way to introduce your dog to other dogs (and humans) on or off leash? When you meet other people and their canines do you feel tense and anxious? Fear no more! We will help give you the tools to be a confident dog owner!

The Saturday Morning Socials will be a weekly event available to members and non-members alike. Every Saturday from 9:00am to 10:00am, the Dog Star Ranch trainer, Kevin, will be out in the parks. As a dog trainer, the biggest challenge that Kevin sees in dog owners is a lack of confidence. Lacking confidence and the knowledge of canine non-verbal communication can be a recipe for a bad situation. This class is designed to help you overcome those hurdles. The cost to participate in the social is $20.00 (All Park Members receive a 50% discount). Each dog must have a current Temperament Safety Test to participate. Do you have questions about the Social? Please contact the Wag-On-Inn if you have questions or wish to participate so we can have a general head count, but walk-in’s are always welcomed. The Social will be taking place in the Small Dog Park so it will be unavailable for general use at this time.

46! 46! 46! New DSR Daycare Record Hit Today!!!

What a great day to be at the Ranch!
Notes from the trainer...
"Today in SD I had my normal class which included Phoebe, Bosley, and Banjo. Today's star was Bosley. Bosley was phenominal in his sit-stay and down-stay. He brought all the manners he ever knew to class today. All dogs worked with manners at the doorways with great success. Videos to follow (posted later this week) to see the SD dogs today. Phoebe also has made great leaps in all areas of training. Banjo was acting like a teacher of the class instead of me. Banjo was keeping each dog in line with each exercise. At times today I was working with one dog in particular to watch each of the others follow each command given (what a great sight)."
Kevin also worked with Ginger, Copper, and Dax today. All of them made great steps in their training.

Is Spring Actually Here! March 16

Today we wanted to make sure to show the photos of the little guys. With the cold wind and snow, they haven't been on the blog much, but they are having a great day! Spring is in the air and all the dogs are loving the warmer temps and the soupy mud puddles! Thanx for another wonderful start to the week!

Don't forget that Dog Star Ranch can also be found on MySpace.com, Facebook.com, and YouTube.com!

Muddy March 13

Looks like everyone is ready for spring to really be here! It was a fabulous day for them to all get out and enjoy some fresh air! Also just a note for those that have been thinking about Bennie (the beagle), he is doing much better. He's been up and about and enjoying some yummy canine chicken soup. Have a weekend everyone and we'll see you again next week!

Pick your "Pond" and Star Structured Daycare 3/10

What a wet and wild day they all had! I think we might need to invest in some row boats to navigate the parks... Sorry, but we were unable to get photos of everyone because of the rain. Everyone had a wonderful time, big and small!

Looking at the weather and the conditions that the parks are in, we just wanted to remind you that if you wanted a clean dog at the end of a Daycare day, make sure to let the morning Star Buddy know. That way your pup can get as dirty as they would like and still sparkle on the way home.

Notes on the Structured DC from Kevin:

"Banjo and Phoebe were the stars of Structured Daycare today. Banjo and Phoebe trained in close quarters with no distraction issue between the two. Bosley joined Banjo and Phoebe to excel for a short time until he found better fun in all distractions. Bosley started off great to finish his session with some challenges. Banjo had worked a little with hand signals today. I have seen a confident boost in Phoebe going through the Structured Daycare. Phoebe now has a great sit or down stay. Sue can down Phoebe outside the lobby doors and can walk all the way to her then recall Phoebe! Great work, Phoebe!!!"

Did You Know?

March 2009
“Did You Know?”

Dog Star Ranch can help you with your boarding visits. This month step by step boarding tips will help you (and your canine friend) be as prepared for their next over night stay!
First time over night guest will start with:
1. Welcome Packet; fill out our rules and policies form & Canine personality profile
2. Your Dog’s Veterinary records; The Ranch requires that every dog is seen annually by their personal doctor and that they are healthy. Reminder; Records can be faxed to us from your Vet at the time of appointment.
3. Temperament Test; a five part evaluation that helps our Star Buddies places your dog in their Community play groups for the safety of all our guest. This “meet and greet” session will help us get to know your dog better, figure out what options will work best for their boarding specifics, and give your dog a chance to meet us. Then when they return to board, they have already had a chance to say hello so it won’t be as stressful to them.

Let’s make a reservation next:
Making a Reservation is as easy as 1, 2, 3… Planning ahead is the key to get the accommodation that your dog requires. Over holidays, spring break, or weekends in the summer, we recommend that you make your reservation at least four weeks ahead of time to ensure that your pup has a spot. As we make your reservation we will ask;
Date and arriving / departing times –
Check-in time is after 2:00pm. Early check-ins will be charged for a half day of boarding care.
Check out is before 12:00p.m. Late check-outs will be charged for a half day of boarding care.
Check-outs that occur while the Wag-On-Inn is closed will be charged a $20 after hours fee for first dog, $10 for each additional dog, Check-ins (ER) after hours is $50.00 ~ Sirius Members save 50% on after hour fees
Feeding / treats – How, amounts, and how often? My Buddy & Me time for feeding is good for the dogs that doesn’t eat, our Star Buddies will hand feed or just sit and comfort them so that they will eat.
Medication / Vitamins – How, amounts, and how often?
Exercise – 4 community plays are including with all types of boarding. During this time, guests go to the community yards for a 20 minute sniff and potty time. Community plays are sometimes alone for dogs that have to much play on there mind or are still working on socials skills. Star Buddy walks are a fully supervised trip to one or more of our Dog Parks (6-8 acres in size). Star Buddy Walk’s are highly suggested for stress & anxiety release at an additional cost. My Buddy & Me time is special time up in our front office with a Star Buddy. This is great for the older or shy dog in need of extra hugs and rubs.
Departure Services – 10% discount on a bath the day of departure. Our guests have a lot of fun being dogs which sometimes means a “dirty dog”.
Deposit – DSR requires a $50.00 deposit to hold your reservation. All deposits are non refundable but transferable if you call and cancel 24 hours prior to the day of arrival.
Reminder: Annual Park Members have priority boarding! We always hold spot for our Members, but it does help us when we have your travel plans in advance. This program is set up for last minute plans, and you never have to worry about where your dog is staying.

Now you have your dog’s evaluation done and your reservation set, how do you know what you need to pack for your dog? We try to make it as simple as we can so you don’t need to pack everything, but the kitchen sink. Every boarding dog is provided with clean food dishes, automatic watering bowls, and cot beds. The rooms are cleaned multiple times per day to help keep every guest comfortable, happy, and healthy.

Here is a check list of what you should pack:

1 If you board your dog on a regular basis, try to use the same bag or tote every time. That way dogs will learn to associate that bag with a little doggie vacation for them at the Ranch. ( DSR is working on getting its very own Tote Bag )
2 We do have lots of blankets here, but if you wish to bring your own, please make sure it is a smaller one. We have washing and drying machines, but large comforters/bed spreads are very hard for the machines to handle.
3 Pack along your dog’s own food. It is best to pre-bag the meals ahead of time to make sure you have enough. A good rule of thumb is to pack as much as you know your dog is going to need plus an extra day’s worth. That way if something happens, we have extra food to provide to your dog. We do have dog food here (Canidae), but it is best to keep your dog on the diet that they are used to. We do have a refrigerator and microwave to accommodate all dietary needs. It’s always okay to pack some snacks for your dog, but please make sure that it is something they are used to getting all the time. If you don’t give your dog pig’s ears at home, don’t send one along for their boarding stay. That may stress their system and cause some loose stools.
4 If your dog is on medications or vitamins that they need to receive while they are boarding, the Ranch requires that you keep them separate from the food. We will make sure that they are given to your dog properly, but we need to be able to regulate and record that the medication was given/taken. Don’t forget to bring updated veterinary records if needed.

Day of arrival:
1. When arriving at the Wag-On-Inn remember to breath. If you are nervous, they are going to be nervous. Dog’s feed off of their human’s emotions. So just breathe and relax. If you are comfortable, your dog will be too.
2. Star Buddy will escort our dog guest to a community yard, so that they can sniff and expel. Say your good byes before you hand the leash to the Star Buddy. If your dog is nervous about leaving your side, try to turn away so the Star Buddy can encourage your dog that it will be okay to go with them.
3. Welcome buddy will go through your complete reservation to confirm any last minute changes.

Any questions about your dog’s boarding visit or daily routine, please feel free to contact us. We strive to make sure each and every one of our canine guests are happy and healthy. If we ever see signs that a dog is stress or uncomfortable for any reason, we will contact the owners and do what we need to make the dog comfortable. We want them to enjoy their visit with us and we love being their home away from home.

Happy Birthday Benji!

Today was a wonderful (but very chilly) day at the Ranch. We must be on a roll because today we have another birthday! Mr. Benji is here to celebrate is birthday with all his daycare pals. His close pal, Bode, made sure to come too! Looks like everyone got the message because we have over 30 daycare dogs today not including the ones that are doing daycare boarding! It’s a fabulously busy daycare day and we are lovin’ it!

Several dogs today participated in Kevin’s Star Structure Daycare program (only to be held on Tuesdays). If you would like to know how your dog did in that program today, you can talk to Kevin at the end of the day or send him an email at train@dogstarranch.com. If you are interested in signing your dog up for that program, let us know! Spaces are limited and it’s a wonderful way for your dog to enjoy a daycare day and work on their obedience as well!

Notes from the trainer regarding today’s Star Structured Daycare…

“Today in Structured Daycare a lot of progress was made, working with the dogs in doorways and understanding their handles are the leader. Banjo, Phoebe, and Bosley did great. Working today and learning a lot of patience. Working on respect, the clan improved from the morning to the evening with noticeable changes.

Chopper was unable to participate with the group. He thought once the group was together it was play time so he worked solo today. Chopper worked on his leash manners and his stay command. Once again a noticeable change from the morning to the evening. Chopper also worked on recall work under limited distractions and did very well. Chopper’s best success today was leash walking.”

Reminder: We have another Risin’ Star Basic Obedience Class starting this Thursday (3/5) at 6pm. If you are interested let us know and we’ll get you signed up. There are only a couple spots left in that class at this time.

Just for fun...
Have a great rest of your day and we'll see you tomorrow!

Friday 2/27 and Monday 3/2 Combined

What a fabulous day to be at the Ranch! We have so many Daycare dogs here today along with all the Daycare Boarding dogs that we have here. The dogs love the Daycare program so much that they just don’t want to miss a step even when they are boarding! Rusty, your dad called to check on you and didn’t find you in the journals prior. So we decided to put you in Daycare today (normally on odd days) and post some extra pictures on top of what’s already there from your previous days. Daycare and Boarding is always a great combo, isn’t it Miss Kendal Bear! You love that part of your boarding stay. Sugar and Fletcher are veterans of the Daycare Boarding! Now, Bennie, I know you’re not doing Daycare Boarding, because you are a Luxury kid, but you’re always out running with them. I think even Miss Phoebe W wanted to make sure she showed her smile on camera for her mom!

Just as a secondary note, we had lots of little guys here both on Friday and today (Monday), but with this wind and very low temperatures, their play time was a bit different. They took advantage of the indoor arena to get away from the cold. Friday we had Goliath, Sami, Roo, and little Tucker. Monday we have Lucy, Aggie, and Boogie. Spring has gotta be getting closer and closer…
Have a wonderful rest of your day and stay warm!
